Good Will Hunting (DVD) ... released 22 January, 2001 at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Robin Williams won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck nabbed one for Best Original Screenplay, but the feel-good hit Good Will Hunting triumphs because of its gifted director, Gus Van Sant. The unconventional director (My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy) saves a script marred by vanity and clunky character development by yanking soulful, touching performances out of his entire cast (amazingly, even one by Williams that's relatively schtick-free). Van Sant pulls off the equivalent of what George Cukor accomplished for women's melodrama in the 1930s and 40s: He's crafted an intelligent, unabashedly emotional male weepie about men trying to find inner-wisdom. Matt Damon stars as Will Hunting, a closet maths genius who ignores his gift in favour of nightly boozing and fighting with South Boston buddies (co-writer Ben Affleck among them). While working as a university janitor, he solves an impossible calculus problem scribbled on a hallway blackboard and reluctantly becomes the prodigy of an arrogant MIT professor (Stellan Skarsgård). Damon only avoids prison by agreeing to see psychiatrists, all of whom he mocks or psychologically destroys until he meets his match in the professor's former childhood friend, played by Williams. Both doctor and patient are haunted by the past and, as mutual respect develops, the healing process begins. The film's beauty lies not with grand climaxes, but with small, quiet moments. Scenes such as Affleck's clumsy pep talk to Damon while they drink beer after work, or any number of therapy session between Williams and Damon offer poignant looks at the awkward ways men show affection and feeling for one another. --Dave McCoy

Rating:

Released in 1997 this is the film that brought really brought the talents of Matt Damon to a wider audience. Not only does he star in this movie but he also wrote the script with his close friend Ben Affleck. THE STORY Will Hunting is a young janitor working at MIT with a history of abuse as a child he has been in trouble with the police for most of his life. Despite his troubled background and Will has an incredible aptitude for maths. Eventually he is noticed and helped by MIT Professor Gerald Lambeau who befriends him. Crowned Review A real stroke of genius (1025 words)
by - written on 08/03/04 (Very useful, 167 readings)
Rating:

Written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and directed by Gus Van Sant, Good Will Hunting is another of those films from the category I would describe as ?feel good films?. What I mean by this is, that Good Will Hunting is a film that will make you happy, sad and sometimes downright angry all in the space of just over two hours. Now films of this ilk are either spectacularly good or spectacularly bad and the key (in my opinion) is the degree to which each of the three emotions are used (bear with me it gets better). Too much of one of the ingredients leads to a film that is either sickeningly upbeat or downright depressing, which is why more often than not I steer clear of ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Good Will Hunting (DVD): How do you cope with an uncontrollable willy? (1348 words)
by - written on 15/01/02 (Very useful, 149 readings)
Rating:

This is the quandary that Robin Williams finds himself in when presented with an aggressive and emotional genius. Matt Damon portrays the willy in question, Will Hunting to be precise and for those of you had wondered about the relevance of the film title to the plot, you now have your answer! Good Will Hunting is a film that will toy with your emotions as the story unfolds. Personally, I would consider this a classic, although it will not appeal to those who prefer action and mindless violence to plot and credible characters. Anyway, enough waffling for the moment, what about the plot? Main cast list ************** Matt Damon - Will Hunting ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Good Will Hunting, Good Film Buying! (514 words)

Rating:

Good Will Hunting is one of those films that I saw a few years ago on TV late one night and really liked, then forgot about! Until the other week when I saw it on Lovefilm.com and added it to my rental list. It arrived a few days ago and we watched it last night and it was every bit as good as I remembered. Matt Damon stars as Will, a young hot-headed lay about who hides a secret, he is a genius! When his Parole Officer sends him to work as a janitor at the prestigious MIT college he finds an equation on a blackboard that takes the best mathematicians years to solve. The next morning the complicated maths problem is solved and the Tutors are baffled by who ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Good Will Hunting (DVD): Intense psychological study (332 words)
by - written on 01/09/09 (Very useful, 10 readings)
Rating:

note: also appears on The Student Room and Flixster Good Will Hunting is a massively acclaimed, financially successful film that shot its writers and co-stars, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, to Hollywood prominence. The film revolves around Will Hunting (Matt Damon), a genius who simply has not applied himself his entire life, and despite being extremely intelligent, is a janitor at MIT. However, the film is more psychologically complex than first thought (and in fact, my A-Level Psychology teacher showed us the film) - Hunting was abused as a child and has internalised this feeling to blame himself for everything, thus sabotaging every good shot he has had with ...  Read the complete review
