Gossip (DVD) ... released 26 February, 2001 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Gossip is one of a spate of movies that owe a lot to Cruel Intentions. This time it's rich kids in college, but other than that Gossip stays well within the beautiful-young-people-doing-awful-things-to-each other formula. Lena Heady plays Jones, obviously the Smart Girl because she is briefly seen wearing glasses. Jones hangs out with Arty Guy Travis and Handsome Rich Guy Derrick, who finances their adventures and has a little bit of a lying habit. The three are all in the same journalism class (acidic monologist Eric Bogosian plays the acidic professor) and decide to start and track a rumour for their term papers. They pick rich and beautiful couple Beau and Naomi (Joshua Jackson and Kate Hudson) as the focus of the rumour, and before you know it their juicy story starts spinning out of control into ugly territory and a truly ludicrous climax. There are attempts at making sledgehammer points about the slippery task of finding Truth, but mostly Gossip is about the guilty pleasure of watching pretty young actors be mean to each other. You'll hate yourself in the morning, but watch it anyway. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

Derek, Cathy and Travis are three journalism students who come up with a fascinating experiment; start a completely fictitious rumour and see how it changes and evolves.. Then write a thesis on how gossip affects people’s lives. So when the rich and manipulative Derek sees the famously celibate Naomi fighting off her horny boyfriend (who has the excellent name Beau) he decides to spread that they had sex and her celibacy is just a cover up for her raunchy behaviour. It seems like the perfect plan, and pretty harmless... that is until Naomi accuses Beau of rape and a police investigation rocks the college community. But Cathy starts having trouble, Derek is hiding ...  Read the complete review

Gossip was released in 2000 with a run time of 90 minutes. It's rated 15 because of the language throughout and the nature of the storyline. Three college students Derrick (James Marsden), Cathy (Lena Headey) and Travis (Norman Reedus) decide to start a rumour for their class project. We've all been part of gossip before, but where do these rumours come from and how do they get so out of hand? One night at a party, Beau (Joshua Jackson) and Naomi (Kate Hudson) are drinking pretty heavily and they end up going upstairs together. Naomi ends up passing out and Beau leaves her lying on the bed. While this was going on, Derrick was outside the room but ...  Read the complete review

Okay, hands up if you have never repeated a bit of gossip? Maybe, John’s having an affair with Jane or; Harry got caught stealing a garden gnome. While it might be ‘news’ of the moment, it also constitutes gossip. Maybe you’ve been the subject of some gossip, at home or in the office! Anyway it’s sometimes and it’s sometimes! But has gossip been so harmful as the gossip that is spread in this thriller. Beau and Naomi are a couple. They attend a party, where the drink is flowing. They drink more than their share and wonder up the stairs to the ‘little room’. Naomi and Beau begin to make out, until Naomi (Kate ...  Read the complete review

Great idea.... Bad movie.....  (550 words)

There is nothing more frustrating than a film that fails to live up to its premise, and sadly Gossip falls into this trap. That's not to say that it is without merit, as the film does put across some incisive points about the nature of its chosen title and the damage caused by loose tongues. It's just that it then chooses to throw it all away on melodrama and an ending that seems to defuse the point that the picture has been trying to make for the previous ninety minutes. It seems a little weird to be writing on a film on the tricky subject of gossip; perhaps you will read this review and tell a friend that the film is okay, and they will tell a friend ...  Read the complete review

Last night I watched "Gossip" on DVD. I was expecting a good enjoyable film, and I certainly got it. My fiance however was expecting a teen drama flick, and only watched it to keep me sedated for the evening. I was very surprised after it was finished and he said "It was a lot better than I expected!" The movie is excellently made and is surprising deep and tense. The Plot: Three college friends decide that they are going to start a rumour about another girl, for various motives, but at first it seems mainly because they want to track the rumour and see how it grows. This isn't the real reason one of the friends wants to start ...  Read the complete review
