Grease (DVD) ... Newton-John ... / DVD released 23 September, 2002 at Paramount Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / Grease was a phenomenal hit with its target teenage audience when it was released in 1977. The songs dominated the pop charts and brought heady success for its lead actors, John Travolta (Danny) and Olivia Newton-John (Sandy) despite the fact that--as with their energetic co-stars--their own teenage years were some way behind them. As they seize the chance to relive their schooldays, their verve and enthusiasm explodes from the screen. The real class, though, comes from Stockard Channing as feisty Rizzo and, in a couple of cameos, wisecracking silver screen actresses from yesteryear Eve Arden and Joan Blondel. Based on the 1972 stage show and adding several new numbers, Grease is at heart a rites-of-passage movie with plenty of feel-good moments and a euphoric buzz. "You're the One That I Want", "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "Summer Nights" became the soundtrack for a generation of high-school students on the cusp of adulthood. Today, it looks like a pastiche of those 1950s Connie Francis rock & roll beach films. But the steady stream of double entendres and knowing body language render it more accessible to the less innocent late 1970s. It's overwhelming nostalgia for anyone in the vicinity of 40. On the DVD: The 25th anniversary special edition of Grease rolls back the years: the 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation transports you instantly back to fifth-form heaven in the local fleapit. The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound ensures that the songs--ever the staple of MOR radio--complete the nostalgia trip with real zip. The main extra is a short series of fond reminiscences from the actors and director Randal Kleiser, actually filmed for the 20th anniversary. --Piers Ford

... watching it, it is irresistible, you will have to finish it to the end. I think that this movie captures the high sprites and goals of that generations youth. I also thought that it also being a musical love story was very good. We all love music and we all love love stories. Travolta and Olivia Newton John, I do have to say where the best and they are the ones that brought this movie to life, without them, the movie would not have been a success. It does make a good Sunday afternoon movie for the family to watch...more

In 1978, director Randal Kleiser gave us a magical and historical musical film that epitomised high school in the US in the middle of the 20th Century - Grease is the word! The Plot Australian Sandy Olssen visits America for a summer and meets bad boy Danny Zuko. Come term time, she finds herself at Rydell High, and meets the Pink Ladies, a group of girls at the high school, the 'It' girls of the school. She soon fits in with them, and becomes a cheerleader for the high school football team. On a rally night for the team, she finds herself face to face with Dnny and finds out he is the leader of the 'T-Birds', the school's 'It boys' gang! What ...  Read the complete review

The storyline ------------------- Sandy was visiting America from Australia. She met and fell in love with Danny when they met at the beach. Danny thought that Sandy had returned to Australia, but her parents had decided to remain in America and ironically Sandy ended up at the same school as Danny. He had totally changed from when she first met him as he had to impress his mates at school as he was the leader of the group called the T-Birds. So either he had to change or Sandy did. Sandy ended up joining the Female group the pink ladies and they helped her to wow Danny. Can opposites really attract, and can they remain together. They are ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Grease (DVD): I wanna be a Pink Lady!! (4089 words)

This actually my second attempt on an op on this topic. The first was….. basically c**p. And has hopefully been deleted from the dooyoo records forever? Unless they keep them and use them in the future to bribe and torture their members in some way?? If that is the case, I’ll give up now!! Seriously, it was bad. Very bad. So, I mailed Amit and asked him ever so nicely if he wouldn’t mind deleting it, and my meagre collection of points in order to make way for this one. He did, (nice guy that Amit) it has, and therefore, you are now reading it. Anyway, sit back, relax, and let idodoyou transport you back into the hallowed halls of Rydell ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrease is the word (528 words)

Rating:

I hate this film. I really do. I cant quite remember how, or why, or when it happened. I remember liking it. I remember loving the soundtrack. I remember thinking Olivia Newton John was terrific (how gay am i?). Now, the relentless repeats, re-releases, and tributes have become universally tedious. Sandy and Danny get together for a summer romance on the beach, which threatens to end when Sandy has to go back home to Australia. However, a change of plan means that they'll be re-united in the school year at Rydell High. Unbeknown to Sandy though, Danny is head of T-Birds; a gang of neanderthals who cruise around in leather jackets aided by the school's ...  Read the complete review

Introduction ------- Most people have seen ''Grease'' at some point or drunkenly sang along to the megamix of the soundtrack that they play in cheesy clubs, when that bloke you've been avoiding all night is determined to be the Danny to your Sandy. You see Danny and Sandy are the filmatic equivalent of bangers and mash but in a much more kitsch way. In fact, Sandy and Danny even inspired the video for Kylie and Robbie's 'Kids'. I have had the same VHS copy of ''Grease'' since I was twelve. I can even spot when TV channels edit out a single line as I know the script so well, so be prepared this opinion may get more than a little ...  Read the complete review
