Advantages: great songs
Disadvantages: none
I first saw this movie when I was about ten, my mum took my sister and myself to the local picture house (which is still there but no longer in use). I remember singing all the songs and mimicking the characters. I have owned the video for some time now and I think I have memorized the whole script! In 1978 Paramount Pictures released a musical that would go down in history as a classic. Grease is set in the 1950’s and is centred round a group of teenagers. The movie opens with a romantic beach scene (somewhere in California) were a young couple are chasing each other, splashing around the water, watching the sun set etc. (it's all very innocent). The couple are Sandy Ollsen (Olivia-Newton-John) - a goody two shoes Australian girl and Danny Zuko (John Travolta) – an ultra cool gang leader (the gang are called the T-birds). When the summer ends Sandy announces that she has to go back to Australia and that she can never see Danny again. ~~ On the first day of school (Rydell high) ~~ Danny and Sandy are totally unaware they are at the same school. Sandy strikes up a friendship with Frenchy (a pink lady). During the lunchtime break Danny (with T-Birds at athletic field) and Sandy (at the lunch tables with Pink Ladies) give quite different accounts of their summer romance with the song "Summer Nights". When The Pink Ladies realise the identity of Sandy’s sweetheart they don’t let on they know him - Rizzo wants to surprise the two by bringing them together at the bonfire on Saturday. ~~ At the bonfire ~~ Sandy does a terrible job cheerleading but still get's the "glad eye" from Tom Chisum (a “goody two shoes” athlete) When Sandy and Danny are finally reunited they are thrilled, Danny quickly remembers his coolness. Naturally, Sandy is upset and is comforted by her new friend Frenchy, she invites her to a Pink Ladi
es pyjama Party at her house. ~~ PJ party ~~ Sandy tries, desperately, to fit in and be comfortable around these streetwise girls. Rizzo thinks Sandy is a joke and ridicules her constantly ("Are you making fun of me Riz?"). Frenchy announces that she’s dropping out of Rydell. The T-birds show up and Riz goes with them (for Kinickie). Rizzo and Kenickie get passionate in the back seat of Kenickie's new car but something terrible happens but “what the hell”. ~~ At the garage ~~ After being attacked by Leo "Crater Face" Balmudo, Kenickie’s car is in a bit of a state. So the T-birds decide to fix it up, with the help of Murdoch. It turns into a “mean machine”. ~~ Frosty’s Palace ~~ Sandy is now dating Tom Chisum, she wants to make Danny jealous and it seems to be working. Danny apologizes for treating Sandy the way he did but she won’t forgive him. He decides to tryout for sports to win Sandy back. Danny is not much of a team player, he unsuccessfully tries out for basketball (he hits a team mate), wrestling (he hits his partner), and baseball (he hits the umpire). Then he tries out for track and, seeing Sandy, tries his best. Of course, he fails and ends up tripping over a hurdle, causing Sandy to come running up to him. The two get back together and Sandy drops poor old Tom like a hot tomato. They plan on a date at the Frosty Palace. ~~ Back at the Palace ~~ Danny really likes Sandy but he is, obviously, still having image problems – he rushes Sandy to a secluded table (“you nearly pulled my arm out of the socket”). They are soon to be disturbed by the pink ladies and the T-birds. Rizzo and Kenichie fall out and leave Frenchy on her own. Will Danny and Sandy overcome the image barriers? Will Rizzo and Kenichie make up? <
br>If you have never watched this movie then you’ll have to watch and see what happens. ~~The cast~~ John Travolta - Danny Zuko Olivia Newton-John - Sandy Olsen Stockard Channing - Rizzo Jeff Conaway - Kenickie Barry Pearl - Doody Michael Tucci - Sonny Kelly Ward - Putzie Didi Conn - Frenchy Jamie Donnelly - Jan Dinah Manoff - Marty Eve Arden - Principal McGee ~~Facts~~ Olivia Newton-John was sewn into her tight trousers (very tight-spandex) for the last scenes at the carnival at Rydell High because her zipper broke early in the sequence. ...Henry Winkler was originally cast as Danny, but passed on the part for fear of being typecast in the Fonzie-stereotype he was then playing on the 0Happy Days TV series.

- 15/11/01 Yeah, you certainly love this film... When I was little I used to think that the Fonz and Danny were the same person, I did have difficulty in telling them apart. |

- 08/11/01 I think most people have seen Grease and "the plot" is a bit predictable in my opinion - "the beauty" of Grease is found in the characters, songs and one liners - that's what makes me watch it again and again :-) |
