I watched this movie because of a recommendation from my sister and it took me a good 3 or 4 years before I actually got around to watching it. I like watching musician life story movies so this was a must even though I took a while to get to it.
------------Jerry Lee Lewis (For Those Who Don't Know)--------
Great Balls of Fire is a movie about famous entertainer from the 50s Jerry Lee Lewis. Jerry Lee Lewis was know for his energetic performances singing, dancing and playing the piano (sometimes all at once). He was the full package and actually had real talent. In those days not everyone was so happy to hear his music and was sometimes frowned upon and called 'devil music'. His peak was when he was in his 20s and his hits were songs such as Great Balls of Fire and Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On. Jerry Lee Lewis is widely known for his relationship and marriage to 13 year old second cousin Myra Gale Brown when he was 22.

---------Plot & Performances-----------
Jerry lee Lewis career is taking off and his songs are rising in the charts. After moving in with his cousin he starts to spend time with his cousins daughter Myra who he begin to fall in love with despite her being only 13. The two elope in Mississippi and Myra is pushed out by her parents to go live with her new husband. Jerry Lee promises he will look after Myra and at first their lives begin wonderfully. Jerry Lee Lewis's career continues to take off and he books his first tour to England which he takes Myra to show her off to the British public. He lies to the press and tells them his new wife is 15 but we all know the press like to dig around and it was soon found out how old she really was. This led to him being deported and his career took tumble after tumble when he returned home leaving him in an awful state and in desperate need to be forgiven. The question is will how can he recover from this?
The plot I thought was very good even though I wouldn't condone a 13 year old getting married to someone in their 20s it really is a good story. I think with this movie because I have never actually seen a movie like this that was actually a true story especially from a musical legend it makes it all that more interesting and fresh to watch.
The plot moves along nicely and it almost feel like your on the journey with him because it's a very detailed movie and quite true to the true story from what I have read and heard.
The characters performances played a huge part in making this movie as good of a watch that it is. Dennis Quaid is so entertaining in this movie and if Jerry Lee lewis is anything like him I can imagine he is a fun person to be around. It was strange how clueless to the situation Jerry Lee Lewis was. Throughout the movie he was baffled why no one approved of his relationship which did show how much he must have truly love Myra. Generally Dennis Quaid did a good job on this role.
Winona Ryder did a superb job a Myra Gale Brown. For me it was her role that stood out and I loved her character, her personality and how innocent she was. As a pair Ryder and Quaid bounced of each other very well and made the movie and anyone would think they really were in a relationship.
The two who played Myra Gale Brown's parents I really wanted to slap some sense into at times. Myra's parents in the movie might aswell of let Myra and Jerry mess around under there roof because the chemistry between them was beyond noticeable and it took forever for the parents to even begin to become suspicious. There was one point in the movie I wanted to just scream when Myra's mom caught her on the phone with Jerry at 3 0'clock in the morning and on the other side of the line Myra's dad caught Jerry talking to Myra. Both of her parents needed a slap into reality because there is no reason for a man in there 20s to be on the phone with a 13 year old in the middle of the night. The parents being so oblivious to the situation makes you get into the movie even more because it allows you to put yourself in their position and think would you have saw the signs. Loved their acting though because they were just clueless especially her mother.
The movie features alot of Jerry Lee lewis songs and has a number of performances. His music and performances in the movie are just so lively and energetic it makes me wish I was old and grew up listening and watching them.
The movie is a really good and enjoyable movie to watch. It gives you a insight into the 50s and into the life of Jerry Lee Lewis. The movie was made in the 80s which is quite a while after the 50s but the makers have definitely managed to recreate the era the events actually took place. The story is a little off putting imagining a 13 year old child in a relationship with a grown man but still the acting was great and I generally thing think movie is definitely worth a look.
The movie is available to buy on Amazon New & Used from £3.39 and It's worth a look. It's definitely more of a mature movie and not suited for younger views.. The movie is rated a 15.
---------Real Life Jerry & Myra--------
The real life Jerry Lee Lewis stayed married to Myra for 17 years and they had 2 kids together. The relationship lasted long if you ask me so there must have been true love there.
