Green Wing is a sitcom like no other. It's set in a hospital somewhere in London and this first Series charts the progress of new the new doctor, Caroline Todd (Tamsin Greig; Black Books) into the loony hospital. The set up sounds fairly sane but the way the writers appear to work is by writing the actors a rough plotline and then have them improvise insanely. It feels like immature Python humour restrained within plot. Dr Todd finds herself surrounded by her workmates, hit on by seedy, sexist anaethatist Guy Secretan (Stephen Mangan), the charming yet distant surgeon Mac McCartney (Julian Rhind-Tutt), made green with jealousy by the untouchable Angela and doted on by ... Created by Victoria Pile, 'Green Wing' is a very unusual hospital based comedy. I hadn't previously watched any of the episodes in their entirety, but had stumbled across clips and various extracts whilst channel hopping. From what I saw, I found certain bit to be funny, whilst other bits looked to me as if they could become annoying quickly. However, above all else, I noted that the show had a surreal air about it. Therefore I decided to buy the box set of Season 1 - thinking I would probably sell it on eBay afterwards if it was no good. I got into the style of the comedy pretty quickly, and realised that as a whole, there is both ... Read the complete review

______ What's it about? ______ Green Wing focuses on the day to day workings of various 'professionals' in East Hampton Hospital. I say 'professionals' as you'll rarely see them do any work and the actions of some staff will leave you praying that those people don't really exist (one example, the Staff Liaison Officer Sue White gets all her clothes from the 'dead' box. It took her 4 days to get her boots from a stroke victim.) You won't see any patients in this hospital, apart from the random child used to pick up women. We follow the lives and foibles of the HR girls, surgeons, neurologists, students and more. ______ Who makes it? ... Read the complete review

Green Wing is a hospital based comedy, following the stories of a group of doctors and other hospital workers. The first series aired in the UK on Channel 4 in 2004, and quickly picked up a cult following. Having never watched Scrubs, I cannot answer the accusation that I have sometimes heard, that this is a poorer, English version of the US hospital comedy. I have however watched Green Wing, and I absolutely love it. The first series focuses mainly on seven characters: Dr Caroline Todd (played by Tamsin Grieg), Dr 'Mac' Macartney (Julian Rhind Tutt), Guy Secretan (Stephen Mangan), Dr Martin Dear (Karl Theobald), Dr Alan Statham (Mark Heap), Joanna ... OK I'll admit, this is likely to be biased because I'm a huge fan of the series! I won't give you a plot overview because that's already been done many times but I just wanted to really recommend you give this program a try. I guess it's a bit of an aquired taste in someways as it's pretty weird but if you like things like Black Books or Smack the Pony then I'm confident you'll love it. It's massively off the wall but manages to mix this with overarching plot themes and sometimes suprisingly tender moments that catch you by surprise. Importantly though it doesn't do this like Scrubs which, though I like it too, feels the need to rub your face in a moral or ... Read the complete review
