Gridiron Gang (DVD) ... June, 2007 at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / In Gridiron Gang, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson once again displays far more cinematic charisma than one could expect from a former professional wrestler. Sean Porter (Johnson, Be Cool), a football player turned juvenile detention counsellor, wrestles with a seemingly insolvable problem: The vast majority of young men who leave detention fall right back into crime. Seeking a way to give these not-yet-hardened kids a taste of self-esteem and discipline, Porter persuades his superiors to let him teach the kids football--and then take on high school teams. Though based on a true story (documentary footage over the closing credits reveals that some dialogue was lifted straight from the real Sean Porter's mouth), Gridiron Gang is pure underdogs-overcome-adversity formula. A formula is not necessarily a bad thing; when executed with skill and commitment, fulfilling a classic story mechanism can be perfectly satisfying, and Gridiron Gang qualifies. But it's Johnson who carries it through, demonstrating--in the most unlikely of roles--a surprisingly gentle touch. Johnson manages to be manly without overbearing machismo, earning not only respect but empathy. --Bret Fetzer

... watchable. I'm actually a big fan of The Rock too, after growing up in a male dominated household I couldn't escape the two hours of WWE Wrestling that was shown every Saturday morning where my wannabe macho Dad and Brother would sit down and intently watch all the muscle-bound action, trying their best to overlook the fact that it's blatantly fake and utterly ridiculous. After all these years of torture there was one wrestler that always stood out for me though and that was The Rock, he's got a brilliant charisma ...more

Crowned Review Gridiron Gang (DVD): The Rock goes to prison shock! (702 words)

Rating:

Who would have thought that The Rock would follow in the footsteps of Denzil Washington (Remember The Titans) and Samuel L Jackson (Coach Carter) and play the part of an inspirational coach? And how many of those people would have actually thought he would make a good job of it? Gridiron Gang is the true story of a bunch of gang members and juvenile delinquents who are all locked up in Kilpatrick Juvenile Detention Centre on various charges. Sean Porter (The Rock) is a worker there, trying hard to get the kids out of the circle of crime they are caught up in. He wants to get them out of a lifestyle that will almost certainly lead to their deaths at a very ...  Read the complete review

Sean Porter (Dwayne Johnson, better known as The Rock) is a hard working and dedicated detention centre worker, he believes in the kids that are there and is passionate about his tough job. An ex American football player himself he knows only too well how much discipline goes into training for the sport and the bonding that you can experience with your team mates along the way. Therefore in a last effort to mend the unruly delinquents ways he sets up a football team inside the detention centre and vows to coach them until they begin to win games. This task is going to be harder than it first seems as most of the kids in the detention centre have been locked up ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Gridiron Gang (DVD): The Kilpatrick Mustangs (312 words)

Here we have two unlikely candidates for a drama-based movie; a former professional wrestler, The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) and rapper Xzibit as Sean Porter and Malcolm Moore. Both juvenile detention counsellors and American football coaches who notice the alarming and what seems inevitable trend of offenders going straight back to prison and re-offending or worse... being killed. Porter straight away falls into the role of deeply caring for the offenders while trying to establish friendships within, yet enforcing the rules. It seemed that everyone knew where they stood with him and Johnson does a surprisingly stellar job. After persuading his superiors, Porter ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The ROCK Kept Me Focused............... (759 words)

I recently rented a movie from block buster video and as normal I watched all of the trailers at the start of the film to see if there was anything of interest, Then the Grid Iron Gang trailer appeared instantly I was interested as I am a huge fan of Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), the film looked really good and I just had to see it. A few nights later while trudging around Asda doing the weekly shop I picked up the DVD for 5.00, which I thought was very reasonable as blockbuster would charge me 3.95 to rent it for two days, so of 1.05p more I had this DVD for keeps. ABOUT THE FILM The Grid Iron Gang was written by Jac Flanders in 2000 and ...  Read the complete review

Gridiron gang was a surprising change from the beat em up, i dont use guns films associated with the Rock. It tackles issues of Youth crime and gang war in america and how young black males are taking each other out through shootings in a ruthless turfwar. The Rock and Xzibit are workers in a youth offenders institute who are seeing no improvement in the young offenders who pass through. Most of them either get shot or end up back inside. The Rock an ex american football player sees football as an escape for them and a way to get out all their anger. After gaining the support of the head staff at the centre they approach the league and eventually ...  Read the complete review
