Grizzly Man (DVD) ... 01 May, 2006 at Revolver Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL / Werner Herzog's persistent inquiry into the motivations of human obsession focuses this time on the self-proclaimed kind warrior Timothy Treadwell. A passionate wildlife preservationist and grizzly bear devotee, Treadwell lived unarmed among the grizzlies in a remote section of Alaska for 13 years, and eventually died in a bear attack. He filmed his experiences during his final five years, and Herzog makes use of this footage in a posthumous portrait of a complex, intriguing character. A youthful blond actor turned nature lover, Treadwell is revealed over the course of the film to have been a troubled soul who found solace in the wild, and the existential questions and difficulties he faced in the world were, fascinatingly, worked out on film.

... Treadwell's own footage as he talks to the camera about his expedition and how he is interacting with the bears. The film raises an interesting debate, because while it is amazing how close Treadwell was able to get to the bears for so long without being injured, many in the film also argue that he was asking for it, and in disturbing the bear's natural habitat, he himself was committing a crime of nature. What's more, Treadwell is presented as a troubled figure who is trying to break out of modern mundanity and...more

Premium Review Grizzly Man (DVD): Documentary of a man who died doing what he loved (487 words)
by - written on 19/01/08 (Very useful, 18 readings)
Rating:

This film is a documentary narrated and directed by Werner Herzog which looks at the work of Timothy Treadwell and his work with grizzly bears. Much of the film uses video footage shot by Treadwell himself, which makes the film more powerful, especially as it is made clear from the start that Treadwell is killed by the bears that he loves so much. The documentary is not a one-sided look at this naturalist, indeed, it questions whether Treadwell was even right to be in the environment he was. Treadwell claimed that he was protector of the grizzly bears, but other than watch their movements and get very close to them, he did little to actually alter their ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Trespassing... (1050 words)
by - written on 25/03/09 (Very useful, 94 readings)
Rating:

Before watching this documentary directed by Werner Herzog I had never heard of it's human subject, Timothy Treadwell. Infact Treadwell was the Steve Irwin of grizzly bears and like Irwin, he eventually lost his life as he filmed these wild animals whilst in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness. This documentary relates Treadwell's life through interviews with friends and relatives and shows us his footage of the bears right up to the day of his death. Treadwell's recorded footage is shown from the outset - not only the rehearsed scenes where he recites a script but the moments after a scene has apparantly ended. These unrehearsed moments give great insight ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Grizzly Man (DVD): The Right To Arm Bears... (2356 words)

In the last 30 years or so, two larger-than-life figures have been conspicuously enslaved by their twin loves of a) dangerous animals, and b) being on camera. 'Grizzly Man' is the tale of the one that isn't Steve Irwin. ** The Bear Necessities ** It's a mighty, mighty big world out there. A world of majesty and wonder, a glorious canvas of vast landscapes peopled by strange and fabulous creatures. Yep, nature is a beautiful thing. Doesn't stop you from being served up as part of her bountiful smorgasbord, though. Timothy Treadwell was a child of the Long Island suburbs. At school, only his diving ability marked him out as ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Prince Valiant (1203 words)
by - written on 01/03/07 (Very useful, 83 readings)
Rating:

Timothy Treadwell was an idiot. He went mostly alone, and unarmed, into practically the most remote nature reserve on the planet and took a one-man stance against abuse of the grizzly bear. When these vicious carnivores got too close, he would talk them out of it with a sappy, childish voice. Timothy Treadwell was ever so resourceful. The landscape involved is stunning through a camera but must be hellish in reality. However, he seems to have survived on whatever he took with him on the flying boat, or fished for, and never seemed to mind the inevitable mouthful of flies at every breath. Timothy Treadwell was very lucky. Surely hardly anyone ...  Read the complete review
