Premium Review Grosse Point Blank (DVD): Guns for hire (232 words)
by - written on 22/04/08 (Useful, 73 readings)
Rating:

Grosse Point Blank stars John Cusack, Dan Ackroyd and Minnie Driver. Cusack and Ackroyd are both freelance assassins who are quite happy to kill people for hire, they are not only in competition but also in dispute as Ackroyd want to form a union in order to protect their rights and stop different killers bidding for each others contracts while Cusack is against the idea, naturally when you get a dispute between killers it is not always polite negotiations. When Cusack who is becomming a bit jaded with the whole business gets to combine visiting his old high school for a class reunion with a job he does not realise the emotions that this will stir or or the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Better than a video game (251 words)

Rating:

This is a strange sort of film which for some reason I really enjoyed even if at times I'm not sure whether it wanted to be an action thriller or a comedy, in the end it is a bit of both. John Cusack plays the role of Martin Blank who is an assassin for hire who is oing through a bit of a mid life crisis. It does not help matters that he is also in dispute with a rival assassin played by Dan Ackroyd who wants him to join a killers union to ensurethat they do not steal each othes jobs. When Cusack gets an assignment to carry out a hit in a small Detroit Suburb called Grosse Point the job takes hi back to his own childhood school and happens to ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Grosse Point Blank (DVD): The Moon on a Stick (1285 words)

I've often been in the strange position of praising films (Vanilla Sky, Ocean's 11) for their coolness (in terms of actors, soundtracks, etc) while criticising them utterly for failing to deliver on sophistication. Grosse Pointe Blank trumps all more recent luvvie-fests by being cooler than Father Christmas's garden shed, while still managing to be an amazingly brilliant piece of cinema. The plot concerns Martin Blank (John Cusack), a professional killer returning to the high school from which he disappeared ten years previously. He's going back to terminate someone, but as soon as he gets home he's more interested in making up ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Superb! (547 words)

Rating:

In my opinion, "Grosse Pointe Blank" is one of the greatest films of the 1990s. Whereas most romantic comedies tend to be sappy and usually star Tom Hanks and Hugh Grant, "Grosse Pointe Blank" presents a whole new take on this particular genre. John Cusack (in his best performance yet) stars as Martin Blank, a hitman who begins to grow weary of his job. Deciding to quit after one final assignment, he travels to his home town of Grosse Pointe in order to do the job, to swing by his 10 year high school reunion, and to meet up with his ex flame Debbie, performed excellently by Minnie Driver. If you dont like the sound of hearing the words ...  Read the complete review

Grosse Point Blank is a black comedy from 1997, starring John Cusack and Minnie Driver. Martin Blank (Cusack) is a hitman who is feeling depressed and dissatisfied with his work. Add to this a rival hitman, Grocer (Dan Ackroyd), who is pressurising Blank to join a cartel of hitman in order to share the wealth. He receives an invite to attend his high school reunion in his home town of Grosse Point, and events conspire which means he has a "job" in the area. Following advice from his terrified psychotherapist (Alan Arkin) and nagging from his secretary Marcella (Cusack's sister Joan) he reluctantly agrees. On his return, he finds that he still has ...  Read the complete review
