Advantages: Original, very funny
Disadvantages: None
Groundhog Day reunites two of the great cast from "Ghostbusters", Harold Ramis and Bill Murray. This time Harold takes the directors chair and helms this gem of a film.
Bill Murray plays Phil Connors, a weatherman who is sent to cover a story in Punxsutawney, where a groundhog is said to predict the weather. He gets snowed in and so has to stay the night, but when he wakes up, he finds out he has to re-live the same day over and over again. Everyone else seems to be unaffected except him and he doesn't know why.
It's a very original story, and quite far reaching as well, the phrase "Groundhog Day" is now used to mean a sense of Deja Vu, a sense that you've done certain things before.
The acting by all is very good, but it's Murray that steals the show, he really is one of the greatest comedy actors ever. He goes through a lot of changes during his one day, from bewilderment to happiness as he realizes he can do anything, to depression as he knows he's trapped in this town and finally to kindness and charity as he tries to help every person he can and to woo Andie MacDowell, and who wouldn't wanna do that?
This film does inspire a lot of discussion, what would you do in that situation? Would you just give up and stay in bed all time? Would you go and live it up, do everything you ever wanted to do? Or would you do what Murray does, try and push the limits of what this day will allow, and kill yourself in a myriad of ways?
Overall this is one of the best comedies you are ever likely to see, full of great performances and dark humour. Five stars easy and highly recommended!
Summary: He's having the worst day of his life... over, and over...
