If you are trying to compile a list of the greatest movies from the last 20 years, then look no further than this 1993 time-warp classic. The fabulous Bill Murray stars as Phil Connors- a rude, self-absorbed weatherman from Pittsburgh.
The movie opens with Phil travelling with his overly cheerful producer Rita (Andie MacDowell), and sarcastic cameraman Larry (Chris Elliott) to the small town of Punxsatawney where they will be covering the town's annual Groundhog Day festival, much to the annoyance of Phil.
After recording the event, the three start to make their way home to Pittsburgh when they are halted by news of an incoming blizzard (which Phil had actually failed to predict). Phil returns to his B + B and falls asleep, waking up to find that it's Groundhog Day all over again. A confused Phil plays along, thinking that it must be a strange dream- until it happens again, and again, and again!
Phil soon starts to use the time loop to his advantage, at first to steal money and seduce women. But spending infinity with Rita means falling in love with her, and Phil uses each day to try to become a better person, getting to know Rita and becoming worthy of her affections.
This fantastic comedy by Harold Ramis is one that should be a staple in everyone's movie collection. Bill Murray is of course, outstanding in his performance- guaranteed to make you laugh, especially in the scenes where Phil is being hounded by his former schoolmate, Ned.
Conclusion- If you can't get a giggle from this movie, you don't have a sense of humour!
Summary: He's got the small-town blues- forever!
