Advantages: interesting plotline, humorous

Disadvantages: possible plot holes, repetitive - oddly enough.

Groundhog day is both a funny and touching movie about disaffected weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) and his personal growth as he is forced to relive the worst day of his life over and over again.

While he originally reacts to this disturbing realisation originally with disbelief, then anger, then an overwhelming sense of his own immortality, before he eventually uses this opportunity to better himself and win the heart of his producer, Rita (Andie MacDowell).

While the plot is often humorous and poignant, there are a few issues raised about the whole concept of the film - while each day is reset back to 6am on Groundhog Day, with all the citizens of Punxsutawney none the wiser to Phil's phenomenon, Phil remembers not only all of his previous actions and skills, but is able to consistently develop them over time. The range of skills he acquires, such as becoming a jazz pianist, and fluent in French poetry, would obviously take months if not years to achieve, but this is brushed over for the sake of plot. It is unclear as to why Phil remembers his previous attempts at the day, despite no one else doing so.

That aside, this film is a cute and fun film to watch, and one that everyone should see at least once.

Summary: A fun film for the family.
