Hair (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 06 August, 2001 at MGM Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / Milos Forman's 1979 film of the 1968 musical Hair is far more watchable than it has any right to be. Controversial though the original stage version might have been at the time, it has not dated well. It was written back when most people thought the Vietnam War was a good idea and long hair on men a signifier of a hopelessly corrupt society, rather than the other way around. By the time the belated movie adaptation arrived attitudes had changed, and what made Hair so unique had become commonplace. However, the exuberance of the performances (led by Treat Williams) and the enduring appeal of some of the songs makes this movie version of Hair, even today, entirely impossible to dislike. On the DVD: The only extra is the theatrical trailer which, much like the film itself, is quite a cute period piece. Inexplicably, the scene-searching menu is not arranged by song, making it infuriatingly difficult to locate the tune you want, unless you already know the movie so well, which would leave little point in hearing these songs again anyway. --Andrew Mueller

The film is brilliant for it's music firstly, everyone will be familiar with some of the songs from it. Probably the most famous being 'I Got Life', a bit hit for Nina Simone. This is more that just a musical though, the story is political, funny at points and also has times where you'll be in tears. A real story with an un predictable twist in the tale. If you recently saw Hairspray and loved it then you need to, if you haven't already, see the original musical tribute to the sixties. Set in 1968 "Hair" tells the story of an Oklahoma farmboy, (Claude), and his adventures with a "tribe" of hippies in New York on his way to join the Army and head to Vietnam. It one of the greatest musicals in my humble opinion and has everything that a film set during this difficult period of America's history should have. Claude leaves the ranch in Oklahoma where he grew up and right from the start you get the opinion that he has had a very sheltered life. His father gives him $50 for emergencies and Claude quickly hides this in his boot. He gets on the bus and heads towards his destiny. Once in New York Claude has a few days ...  Read the complete review
