Half Past Dead (DVD) ... Morris Chestnut ... / DVD released 15 September, 2003 at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Despite critical roasting, Half Past Dead is, surprisingly, not half bad. Once you recognise this bastard child's recent action-flick heritage (The Rock being the most obvious of a dozen pilfered plot lines), you can kick back and enjoy the unexpected perks that arise when a deep-cover FBI sleuth (Steven Seagal) accompanies a convicted crook (rapper Ja Rule) into "New Alcatraz" prison. A death-row killer (Bruce Weitz) sits on a $200 million goldmine, keeping his secret as a bargaining chip when criminal commandos (led by the ever-cool Morris Chestnut) drop in for a lethally greedy raid. After cutting his teeth on trashy, short-lived US TV series, director Don Michael Paul can't do much to help the puffy, career-tanking Seagal, but he's got lively allies in Ja Rule and alleged "has-been" Nia Peeples (forget Lara Croft, this babe rocks), and even legendary action-TV producer Stephen J Cannell drops in for a cameo. Derivative from the get-go, but fun just the same. --Jeff Shannon

Premium Review Half Past Dead (DVD): Everything Is Good In The 'Hood (839 words)

I'm not sure what it is about Steven Seagal films that seems to keep drawing me back. Just recently the quality of everyone's straight to video action star has really been going downhill. Browsing through HMV the other day though I came across Half Past Dead, a film released in 2002 just before this bout of terrible films kicked in. In the early 90's he was the star of many a brainless action film, Nico and Under Siege to name but 2. At the start of 2000 and beyond he seems to have ventured into the films with rappers, before his move to his recent trend of simply bad films. Just for a change Seagal plays an undercover FBI agent, Sasha. He's gone undercover to ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Possibly The Dumbest Thing You Won't Bother To See All Y ... (975 words)

This could quite possibly be the very worst Steven Seagal movie ever. Do you need any less of a recommendation??? It only lasts 90-something minutes but somehow it seems like you've been watching for ages, probably because Half Past Dead takes an excruciatingly long time to actually get to its point - just long enough for Seagal to ooze that distinct brand of anti-charisma, drive a car very fast for no apparent reason and try to sound like a black guy born and raised in the ghetto. Erm yeah OK. In fact, we learn to our amusement that he is a Russian car thief - without a Russian accent of course, that would be stretching Mr. Seagal's acting 'talent' too ...  Read the complete review
