Advantages: Very funny, good special effects!
Disadvantages: Little on the short side!
Having seen the trailers, and being that I am quite a big Will Smith fan, I was very keen to see this film. The reviews I had read on the film made it out to be fairly ordinary, but I wasn't put off and decided to watch the film, and I must admit I enjoyed it.
The movie centers on John Hancock (Will Smith), a superhero like no other. Hancock lives out of his trailer, and spends his days drinking and sleeping on the city's streets. When Hancock does decide to help the LAPD fight crime, he seems to cause more damage to the city than the criminals themselves, thanks to his carelesness. After his latest crimefighting mishap, the city and people of Los Angeles have had enough, and a warrant for his arrest is issued.
Hancock is befriended by Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), after saving his life, whilst his wife Mary (Charlize Theron) casts a suspicious eye over him. Ray decides to help Hancock turn over a new leaf. He wants to help Hancock improve his ailing attitude, and to win over the hearts of the public. Hancock faces some major changes in his life, as he also finds out some unexpected news about his past, and faces up to criminals who are out to kill him.
I thought that Hancock was a really good film. It wasn't the best film I've seen, but I thought it was very enjoyable. Will Smith is his usual excellent self as the stubborn, un-caring superhero, and I thought that the supporting cast of Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron was also very good.
I thought that the film was very funny, and was probably targeted more towards the adult audience, as opposed to children, due to the amount of language in the film. This made the movie all the more funnier, but in a way is also a shame, as it is probably a movie that, swearing apart, would appeal greatly to children. The action scenes and special effects were excellent, and gave the film a quality and well made feel to it.
The story was good, but maybe could have been a little better, and also the movie was only about 85 mins long, and I felt that it was over fairly quick. But despite these little flaws, it is definitely a film that I would recommend, and certainly one that I would watch again.
Summary: A very funny, good action film!
