Advantages: Good concept, great actors
Disadvantages: Changed halfway through to a Rom-com
When i heard about this film (well saw the trailer actually) I thought this was an extremely good idea for a comedy. The idea of an alky, with superhuman powers is a recipe for success. For the first half of the film, this didn't disappoint.
Will Smith is at his usual best in this role as he plays an alcoholic, depressant superheroe whos' attempts to fight crime involve massive amounts of damage to public property and seem fuelled by his own selfishness. He then saves the life of public relations man Jason Bateman, who decides that it would be a good thing to return the favour, by ensuring that Hancock changes his image and becomes more popular in the public eye (He has a record number of warrants out for his arrest).
Batemans' character manages to change a few things about Hancock and things appear to be going in the right direction... until he finds something out about Batemans wife. (I'll not spoil it for you if you haven't already seen it).
This film, about halfway through, changes from being quite a funny comedy to a sort of Rom-com. I personally think that the film needed to decide what it should be from the offset.
That said, Smiths puts in another great performance and Charlize Theron is stunning as always. Its certainly a must see but just a "take your brain out" type of film.
Summary: Certainly worth watching
