Advantages: Fun at times
Disadvantages: Silly plot, too rushed
I gotta admit, the trailer for this left me dying to watch it, but after doing so, i just felt so dissapointed, and a littlke cheated. With Hancock, i was expecting an extremely amusing film about a lazy, drunken 'superhero' who has a battle of consciounce, and while, in a way, this is what this film is about, the whole thing has just been so rushed that it is pretty hgard to enjoy it.
Plot-
Hancock(Will Smith)superman like abilities, though he would rather spend his days drinking and hating the city he lives in. At heart, he is a good guy, as he will help out in emergencies, but his disrespect for most things has usually left the city in a worse state than it would be without him, and due to this the public hate him. However, one day he saves a down on his luck good guy named Ray (Jason Embry) whose job it is to promote the image of a company, or in this case a person. Ray and Hancock make an unlikely pair, as Ray tries to fix Hancocks public image by all means necessary. However, Ray's wife Mary (Charlize Theron) has reasons for not wanting her husband to get too close to the emotionally messed up superhero.
With this plot, this film could have been a classic, as the cast all fit their parts with enough enthusiasm and acting to pull it off. However, Hancock as a movie is simply too short. It starts off fine, with a few humerous examples of Hancocks 'bad behaviour' but then as soon as Ray decides to help out Hancock everything gets rushed, with him becoming the peoples saviour after a single heroic deed. The cue a whole heap of plot, that is acted out and has the credits rolling before you've fully even taken in the twist.
The plausibility meter is also high too. I don't mean that he is a superhero. but about the plot in general. The idea that a guy who has been antisocial for...well, lets say 'a while' has not bofore changed his life, but after a cutesy family gathering decides to play good guy just seems a little unconvincing.
Smiths acting her could maybe have been used to a greater standard, and Bateman is probably strongest here, as the kind hearted good guy, who has enough warmth to make this movie a little endearing.
Summary: Don't expect what you see in the trailer

- 25/06/09 Yeah, this one was a bit of a miss. They didn't seem to be able to decide whether it was a comedy or serious actioner. |
