Having watched The Silence Of The Lambs on channel 5 last week I was really looking forward to watching the sequel “Hannibal.” To be honest I much preferred Silence Of the Lambs. It had a better storyline and really kept you on the edge of your seat. Hanniba l is a film most people would want to see to find out what happens to Dr Lecter having escaped in Silence Of The Lambs. After the film had finished I felt a bit annoyed, I had spent £4 on a film, which I didn’t particularly enjoy and in my opinion wasn’t scary at all. However if I hadn’t gone I would have spent the next few weeks wondering what could have been.

The film doesn’t contain the ain Jodie Foster which was very disappointing, the film didn’t really have the “sequel” feeling, if you know what I mean. Clarisse Starlin is played by I think it is Julieanne Moore but I’m not sure. She is the main female actor in 9 months anyway.

The film is basically about a trigger happy FBI agent “Starlin” who at the start kills a women who is surrounded by huge bodyguards armed with mack 10’s. Well I think this is the best part, there is lots of action and is really tense. However a second storyline unfold with one of Dr Lecters victims wanting revenge, by sending to goons to hunt him and kill him using human eating boars, egged on by the sound of people screaming. Soon Dr Lecter makes his appearance, he has changed his name and settled down in Florence. Well the Florence police track Dr Lecter and soon realise the reward for a finger print is £3m. The FBI soon realise that the Italian police are tracking him and Starlin warns him not to approach him. This part of the story is ridiculously slow and a bit boring. Still with Dr Lecter lurking anything can happen so you are constantly on the edge of your seat. Anyway with the Italian detective desperate to salvage a finger print he black mails a pick pocket to attempt to steal D
r Lecters wallet. The plan back fires and the pick pocket is left dead. This part is the first glimpse of action for a while but the special effects are great.

The film to be fair does have its fair share of gruesome, bloody horror. Some of the effects are awesome with blood and guts flying. However these gruesome parts aren’t particularly scary just a little gross. Dr Lecter soon kills the detective and slits the throat of one of the goons. He then soon returns to America to speak to Starlin. Following an exciting kidnap Dr Lecter finds himself captured by his previous victim who now somewhat resembles the facial features of a demented monkey. With the boars ready to pounce agent Starlin somewhat stupidly rescues the cannibal. The boars still have a treat munching on the rest of the goons and the disabled victim, following a shoot out, in which Starlin gets shot, then carried off by the Hannibal. Having stitched up her wound, within the chief FBI’s holiday home, fortunately the FBI agent arrives home for a rest only to be smothered by a cloth which I think stings their eyes. Starlin having called the police comes down stairs to find Dr Lecter at the table with a seemingly doped chief. This part is a bit silly with Dr Lecter removing the chiefs hat and cutting off the top of his head. This part is extremely unrealistic and isn’t particularly exciting of scary. Hannibal then proceeds to feed the FBI his own brain which is not only sad but unrealistic too. Knowing the police are imminent Dr Lecter scrams after cutting his own hand off having been cuffed to Starlin. That part is really sad, why did he not cut the chain????? Again Hannibal escapes and while on the plain feeds some brain to a child which is quite funny.

The script for this film is truly excellent. It is not only tense but adds great humour to the film as well. Such parts as when Hannibal is about to kill the detective he come out with, “I’m taking it into
consideration of eating your wife.” Which is really amusing.

Anthony hopkins also plays another super role and is totally superb.

To say this film is excellent would be a lie. However you must go and see it to find out what happens (or simply read my review!!). The film on the whole is slow to start but soon gets going. It isn’t particularly scary but the killings are very dramatic and are in great detail. The scripts are also good, but I would never watch it twice. You wouldn’t be missing much to save it until it comes out on video, and would also be saving money. I would give this film 60% on storyline and 70% for everything else.
