Advantages: Great End Scene
Disadvantages: Characters, character interaction and scenes left out
I recently re-read the book which I considered to be rather drawn out as compared to Silence Of The Lambs. Much of the original story has been left out of the film as have some characters. The evil Mason Vergers lesbian sister for example would have made a welcome addition to the film as would Startling flat mate Adelia Mapp. The basic plot is much more violent as compared to Silence Of The Lambs. In my opinion the fact that you don't see Hannibal Lector very much in either Manhunter or Silence Of The Lambs gives the Hannibal character a more creepy edge. As he appears quite alot in this film you see some of veneer start to peel away. Several murder scenes have been left out including the one in which Hannibal comes back to America. I don't want to give the ending away but it isn't the same as the ending in the book, and Krendlers end scene with Hannibal and Startling isn't as shocking (or funny) as it appears in the book. I believe this was due to the fact that key interactions between characters were missing. I.E Krendler's scheming behind the scenes doesn't appear much in the film. All in all a fun film but disappointing sequal.

- 07/06/01 I particularly like the way Ridley Scott quietly introduced some of his trademark shots into the film - like the chink of light coming from the ceiling in a dark room, to even the poster - which is typical of his work. A pity that the supporting cast couldn't hold up to Hopkin's fine performance, but it's not a bad film by any means! |
