Advantages: Anthony Hopkins, Glimmers of hope...
Disadvantages: Julianne Moore, Storyline
All I can do with this film is beg you not to think of it in any way as related to the greatest of all films, Silence of the Lambs.
Hannibal itself is not a bad film. It is entertaining, it stars Sir Anthony (a definite bonus in any picture), and it is even quite scary in places. However, anyone who has had the misfortune of reading the book, will know already that it is a huge disappointment after its far far superior predecessor. Maybe if Jodie Foster had agreed to be in it instead of the not-completely-inept but definitely not-up-to-scratch Julianne Moore, the film could have mustered at least a brief challenge to the unrivalled throne of SOTL but no such luck. Anthony Hopkins is again the highlight and fantastic as ever and there is no denying the scriptwriters have vastly improved on the book version, but the atmosphere, emotion, clever storytelling, clever storyline, sublime acting, and chilling scariness of the first film are missing.
Don't get me wrong, if you liked the first film (as you damn well should do!!) you will enjoy this film, but it is certainly nothing special. Maybe the most enjoyable bit is trying to work out who is under all the make up as Mason Verger....I'll leave you to work it out....
There are few very rare moments when the movie shows glimmers of its previous glory but nothing substantial.
We should give thanks, at least, that they have changed the ending...
Think of it this way....There was a REASON Jodie Foster turned this script down....!
