Advantages: Gary Oldman is ok, .
Disadvantages: SHOCK VALUE
It's just sad. Sad that a great actor like Anthony Hopkins has to embarrass himself in a film like this. There is no real content, and so the makers resort to last ditch shock value in order to give the audience something to go home to.
Why is it that sequels are generally worse than their predeccess? Is it complacency? Is it because there is already a core audience and so the film already has a guarantee of at least limited success?
Whatever it is, the filmakers did not try. They did not explore Hannibal's character as much as they could have done. This really could have taken what we knew about him from the first film, and really worked on it. It was a simple detective story with a toned down Hannibal, and a very different looking agent Starling, who all of a sudden was renouned for being trigger happy.
In order to make the film less boring, they rely on gore, which more sickening than it is shocking. If the aim of the film is to generate emotional response, then it only works to the degree that you will want to turn it off before it is over.
Makes Silence of the Lambs look like a masterpiece, one that has been failed by its offspring.
Here's the storyline anyway:
Starling is suddenly this this tough FBI agent (in "Silence", she was firstly a woman, and secondly an agent trainee - in this one there is not much left at all of her feminine side), who is hired by Gary Olman (unaccredited) to capture Hannibal so he can feed him to some hogs. Wow. Gary Oldman's character was Hannibal's first victim (we are given a gory flashback in which we see how he was disfigured, although the scene had no real buzz - well neither did the rest of the film). There's then this boring cat and mouse game in which the makers stick in some gore whenever they can.
Don't watch it if a) you have just eaten, and b) you like film.
If I can think of one positive (?) thing to
say, then it takes a lot of imagination to come up with something as sick and boring as this.
