Advantages: Hilarious comedy
Disadvantages: Not for everyone
Adam Sandler's film company, Happy Madison, has produced some brilliant comedies. This 1996 film is no exception, with a hilarious script and plot, and hilarious acting to boot.
The Plot
Happy Gilmore is obsessed with ice hockey. Each year, he goes to his local ice hockey team to try out for pre-season. Each year, he fails. This time, he comes home to find his girlfriend loeaving him because he refuses to grow up and accept he's never going to make it. On top of this, his gran is about to get in trouble with the authorities for failing to pay her bills.
Gilmore finds he has the ability to hit a golf ball further than anyone else. Under the tuition of Chubbs Peterson, an ageing golf pro, Gilmore vows to enter a golf tournament to win the money to pay for his gran.
The Cast and Performances
Adam Sandler plays Happy Gilmore, and does so with the usual sharp, immature humour that has won him many fans. His portrayal of a guy about to lose everything that suddenly finds a hidden gift seems to be what Sandler is good at. Carl Weathers is Chubbs, and gives Sandler excellent support in the comedy stakes. Christopher McDonald provides the competition on the golf course. Cameos from Richard Kiel (better known as Jaws in the Bond films) and Rob Schneider are also very well timed.
My Opinion
Another hilarious film from Sandler, this is effortless watching. There is nothing great about the cinematography, but this is intentional. It is a film slotting into the genre of easy to watch comedy. It is a film that adults can watch to make them feel immature, in a fun way! The plot flows very well, with McDonald providing enough of a conniving performance to give some angst to the proceedings.
Conclusion
I like this film, and rate it highly. I appreciate Sandler's comedy is not for everyone, but it is for me. I rate this film at 4 stars out of 5.
The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.97.
