Advantages: Funny, Sandler is a great lead

Disadvantages: Silly

Happy Gilmore is a comedy released in 1996, starring the very popular Adam Sandler as a hockey player. After realising his dreams of making it big in hockey are never going to happen and when his grandmother loses her house, Gilmore takes up golf to try and win a tournament with a large cash prize... using a hockey stick! He soon discovers that his talent was in golf all along.

It's a silly movie but I think it's Sandler's best and has higher ratings than most of his other, more mediocre, releases. It's very Sandler-esque; Gilmore needs some urgent anger-management creating hilarious scenes which are still being repeated in his more recent movies. However, his intentions are always good.

The support cast are fairly well picked. Carl Weathers has a very good performance as Chubbs Peterson; a former player and Shooter McGavin is the stereotypical rival with a predictable fate, which is however enjoyable to watch.

You can most probably guess the ending very quickly but it's Adam Sandler's great performance that makes it entertaining nonetheless. This is the movie he is most associated with and he fits the role perfectly. It's a good DVD to own, not just to rent, because it has a lot of re-play value.

Summary: Enjoyable American comedy
