Happy Texas (DVD)

Description: Genre: Comedy / Theatrical Release: 2000 / Director: Mark Illsley / Actors: Jeremy Northam, Mo Gaffney ... / DVD ... more
Happy Texas (DVD) ... released 15 June, 2006 at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Three prisoners on a chain gang find themselves on the loose in Happy, Texas when their prison van overturns to avoid hitting an armadillo. Two of them--Jeremy Northam and Steve Zahn--steal an RV that turns out to belong to two junior-beauty-pageant promoters on their way to organise a pageant in Happy, Texas. When Northam and Zahn find themselves stuck in Happy, their only option is to follow through with their masquerade and put on the pageant. Unfortunately, the promoters are known to be gay, which complicates matters when both men find themselves attracted to local women--Illeana Douglas and Ally Walker. The cast is uniformly entertaining, but it's William H Macy who really steals the show as the town sheriff with a secret of his own. Happy, Texas was an audience favourite at the Sundance Film Festival but didn't do as well in wide release, probably because viewers expected a non-stop farce. But though the movie is a comedy, and a very funny one, its humour springs more from nuances of character than broad wackiness. The situations are a little predictable, but the performers--especially Macy--give it zest and genuine feeling.--Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Take 2 complete unknowns and cast them as convicts on the run from the police, one is a car thief, one is a fraudster. Take Ron Perlman (City Of Lost Children, Alien Resurrection) playing a US Marshall chasing them and the third convict on the run who is a murderer. Happy Texas Year: 1999 Certificate: 15 WEB: www.miramax.com If you were to ask most film fans what the movie "Happy Texas" was all about, the vast majority would no doubt be clueless. This is due to the fact that the film was released vastly under-publicised, with little or no backing and thus got no recognition or attention. Doing only mildly well in the states, Happy Texas may even have been given a STV (straight to video) release in the UK, and even then few people have heard about it. However, after reading the synopsis when it was released on DVD in the United States, I decided to buy the disk and see the movie for myself ...  Read the complete review

I had the pleasure to finally watch this film on video over the weekend. I've been wanting to watch it for a while now, but have forgotten until this weekend! And I have been kicking myself for not watching it sooner. It has a great little story about two convicts (Jeremy Northam and Steve Zahn) who, upon escaping from a prison, steal a mobile home belonging to two homosexual pagaent organizers. They are then forced to pretend they are the two homosexuals!, preparing the young girls of Happy, Texas in their entry to the local event. Zahn has finally been given a chance to truly shine in a leading role, after performing small parts in flicks like ...  Read the complete review

Happy Texas is one of those solid warm comedies that slips through the grinder unnoticed, hopefully someone will spot it and pop it on BBc2 before Channel (can an one get a picture what’s the point of it) Five. It’s the tale of tow small time cons that steel a Winnebago and drive across Texas to escape the law. But the van they are now in the possession of, belongs to a couple of famous southern nancy boy beauty pageant groomers/organizers. The two burly boys see this as a great disguise to evade the law and don the regulation bushy mustaches. All they have to do is drive through the state and be on their merry gay way. But they didn’t ...  Read the complete review
