Van Damme stars as a mysterious homeless man in Hard Target teaming up with naive out of towner Nat on a hunt to find her recently rediscovered father. When his body is found they realise they have stumbled onto something a whole lot bigger than just murder... Sounds pretty thrilling right? In theory... The story is quite a compelling one and at points I found myself waiting for the glorious plot reveal but somewhere along the long there was a bit of an anti climax. Once Van Damme discovers the hideous secret of Nat's father's death there seems to be about 40 minutes of film in which Van Damme sets various elaborate rouses in which to unsettle his pursuees ... Hard Target 'Don't hunt what you can't kill.' If you're looking for the epitome of early nineties action, then look no further than the excellent Hard Target. People give me a bit of a hard time for liking the 'work' of Jean Claude Van Damme, but there is absolutely no denying that Hard Target is probably the one 'must see' film that he has made. Many people, especially my real-life brother jbsabbath deride his films as total tosh, without having ever really watched them. I urge him now to add this one to his Tesco list! The reason Hard Target is so good is because of director John Woo. Most later Van Damme films have tried to emulate the ... Read the complete review

By 1993, Belgium's hottest movie export Jean-Claude Van Damme had firmly made a name for himself in the American movie market, with his trademark martial arts skills coupled with his 'acting' proving to be popular viewing. Films such as Kickboxer and Bloodsport have made for compulsive viewing for those wanting a bit more violence and martial arts who are less interested in the acting side of things. Universal Soldier firmly staked Van Damme's claim as someone big movie directors want when directing an action blockbuster, cast perfectly alongside Dolph Lundgren as a regenerated robot soldier. 1993 saw Van Damme take on a bit more of a cool customer type role ... Hard Target the 1993 John Woo film is an early explosion of the giant directors now distinct style. With unrelenting action and fantastic cinematics Hard Target paved the way for films such as Broken Arrow, Face Off and even Mission Impossible 2. You cannot be a fan of the Genre without giving credit to this this legendary Directior. Hard Target sees Van Dame and a plethora of other big names such as Lance Henriksen, in all out man hunt, sparks flying, bullet zipping and fires blazing that is so Woo. Van Dame has matured somewhat in acting ability albeit still fairly terrible it in no way undermines the purpose of this big budget production. Far ... Read the complete review

Van Damme has made a massive amount of films, most of which are your bog standard throw away action flick. There are, however, a few real gems in there, and this is one of them. With the help of John Woo directing, this is a stylish action film. Van Damme plays a drifter kind of person who is hired to help a woman find her homeless father. What they uncover is what can only be described as human game hunting. Lance Henriksen plays they main baddie, who travels the world, visiting different cities and then sets up “hunts”, mainly of homeless losers with no family, who can then be chased and hunted by very rich people, who obviously don’t get ...
