Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 (DVD)
Advantages: Plot, cast, characters
Disadvantages: Some may find it a little long
We have just got home from watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. As soon as it was released both me and my partner knew it was something we definitely wanted to see and we were both very excited about seeing it! As this film has only just been released it is only available to watch at the cinema so this is a film only review.
Dumbledore is dead and Harry is mourning his loss. To add to his grief, Voldemort is searching for him and has vowed to kill him. Therefore, Harry knows that he cannot return to Hogwarts and instead must keep out of harms way.
His wizarding pals have devised a plan to get him away from his home and to the Weasley's home in the country. Some of his friends will morph into clones of Harry so Voldemort does not know who is the real one and therefore, it will make his plan more difficult.
Once at the Weasley's, Harry is devastated to hear that one of his friends has been killed. He realises that he cannot put others in danger and vows to leave. Ron talks him out of going that day and instead the Death Eaters (Voldemorts assistants) decide when they must leave by attacking the Weasley's home.
Harry, Ron and Hermione must keep out of sight so that Voldemort cannot kill them, in addition to this they are trying to search for the remaining horcruxes to lessen Voldemorts power. Can the trio keep out of trouble?
I had extremely high expectations of this film, I have seen all of the films and read most of the books and I have loved them all. I was hooked on this film from the start, I found it a really fresh watch and therefore found it very interesting.
I haven't read the book that this film is based around so therefore the plot was completely new to me. When I realised that the trio would not be returning to Hogwarts I was a little disappointed because I love watching their school lives usually, however I found the new settings really interesting.
As the trio were in completely different settings than usual I found that I saw them as so much more grown up. This is because they were completely on their own with no help from older wizards and therefore they really got a chance to show off their true magical powers. In addition to this, they are now 17 and therefore they are becoming more and more interested in the opposite sex. I thought this added something else to the film which gave a nice break from all of the action.
As the characters are older, so of course were the actors and I thought their acting skills in this film were absolutely brilliant. There were plenty of familiar faces as supporting actors in the film and I really enjoyed looking out for people I knew from something else.
I felt that I already knew the characters inside out from the other film, however I do believe that somebody who had never seen any of the films or read any of the books before could quite easily go in and watch the film without being too confused.
I thought the plot flowed very well. As this is only part one of this film, I did wonder how they would make a whole film out of half a book. I found there was always plenty going on, there was lots of action and I was hooked. I also wondered what the ending would be and how it would be done. I think the ending was done very well and it wrapped things up enough to end the film there but it also left enough questions unanswered so that you are keen to see the finale.
There are plenty of special effects in this film and they are all done very very well. The effects flow really well and they look very realistic. The actors respond very well to them and they look as real as they could do. Some people have suggested to me that the film should be in 3D but personally I felt that it was fine as it was.
The film runs for well over 2 hours and initially I was concerned that I would find this too long. I will be honest, I was beginning to tire a little towards the end but the ending was done quickly and well meaning that it wasn't dragging. However, I do think the middle of the film could be cut down by around 10 minutes which would make the film a little bit shorter.
Overall, I thought this film was absolutely fantastic. It certainly lived up to my expectations. It was done extremely well and I cannot wait for part 2.
