Advantages: It is based closely on the first installment of the book.

Disadvantages: Make believe isnt everyones goblet of pumpkin juice!

The Harry Potter books have to be one of the best series of all time. And then to have them ALL being made in to films too is quite an achievement!
This film; Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first of the Harry Potter films based on the best selling novel by J.K.Rowling.

This see's a young boy by the name of Harry (played by Daniel Radcliffe) being sent to live with his aunt and uncle after both of his parents are killed. To say that his aunt and uncle don't really like Harry is an understatement! He is also vastly picked on by his rather large cousin Dudley. Being sent to live with his 'family' Harry learns on his 11th birthday that he is in fact...a Wizard. Having letters sent to him by owl post to say he has been accepted into Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry. At this school he meets a series of adventures and new experiences, like learning to work magic, how to play the best wizards game ever - Quidditch and how to battle the dark wizards of the magic world. While meeting some of his greatest friends; Ron Weasley (played by Rupert Grint), Hermione Granger (played by Emma Watson) and Rubeus Hagrid (played by Robbie Coltrane). Alongside the new actors and actresses are; Alan Rickman (who plays Professor Snape), Maggie Smith (who plays Professor McGonagall) and Richard Harris as the famous Albus Dumbledore. As well as making friends Harry also has to learn about his ememys too, like the school bully Draco Malfoy (played by Tom Felton) and there is something strange about the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher too..... Joing Harry and his friends in a tale of magic and adventure, there has never been a film quite like this one!

I think as one of the first films in this series many people didnt really know what to expect (unless you had read the book before hand) however, the casting worked perfectly and children and adults alike all enjoyed this new kind of film. The effects for a film made in 2001 are very believable, like when Harry plays Quidditch. The audience can actually believe he is flying.

Summary: Spell bindingly good!

Aside from naming the actors, this is more like a summary of the book's plot than it is a review of the film; do the cast suit their characters? What about the special effects? Is it too long for younger viewers?
