Advantages: Romantic AND funny - win win! Male and female friendly
Disadvantages: Some annoying character, however true to life
My housemate rented this randomly one night, and insisted I should watch it before she took it back, so my partner and I snuggled up and put it on - him expecting another cheesy chick flick, me not expecting much more.
The movie follows Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin), a woman who has grown up being told that same lie women tell each other to soften the truth - that if a man doesn't call/email/persue you, there must be a good reason - he's had an accident / gone out of town / be mauled by rabid dogs etc... when the bitter truth is that maybe, he's just not that into you. Enter Alex (Justin Long), man who speaks the truth. He becomes Gigi's go-to guy whenever she's unsure what the signs are really saying. Along side this, we have other plots following along similar lines, all being cleverly intertwined without necessarily colliding.
Gigi's character is your typical woman who overthinks everything - I watched the movie going "Oh my days, I've so done that before!" whilst my partner laughed at her desperate ways and interpretation of signs. In the same way, we noted how many of the male characters were true to certain stereotypes, and my partner assures me that Alex's revelations to Gigi regarding how men really think, are also true to form.
The movie is well balanced; you have several storylines running parallel to each other, swapping between them enough to not bore you, and joining them enough at add continuity to the movie. I would see the main storyline as Gigi, with the more supporting plots being portrayed by the bigger names. Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore and Scarlett Johansson all star, yet in their slightly set back roles. To me, this made the movie far less about the stars, and more about quality and orginiality. A big flaw of many of the modern day rom-coms is that they pull in the big names for their leading couple, yet don't necessarily have a good storyline - they use the names as the draw to the audience, and the rest is cheesy, overused cliches. (Oh and by the way, I really am a rom-com fan!)
Both myself and my partner enjoyed the movie - it was funny and witty, original and true to life. He was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't just romance and goo, but actually had comedy in it. It's a movie I would happily watch again :)
Summary: Easy and fun to watch, and not soppy
