Advantages: An interesting script, some good performances
Disadvantages: Very much a film for the ladies
If dating was easy then Gigi Phillips would have nothing to obsess about while she's meant to be working, relaxing and generally enjoying life. She's determined to find true love but seems to get stuck with a string of guys who don't call her after the first date. Then whilst trying to track down Connor the latest in this list of men she meets Alex who lets her in on a little secret, that if a guy doesn't call it means that really he's just not that into you. Along the way we see the influences her actions have on her friends and family and see just how smooth love really is.
This is another one of those films that Jen came home with that as soon as she mentioned watching it my eyes rolled into the back of my head. If the last few films we've watched could be considered comedy chick flicks there was no doubt that this one was going straight into the romantic chick flick genre. There are a host of stars in the cast for this film but I'm afraid that this is really a film for the girls and despite the presence of Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Aniston won't be enough to keep most blokes interested.
Of course looking back at director Ken Kwapis's previous work its little surprise that this is a slushy love story type of movie. Couple that with the writers being the brains behind Sex and the City and from a male perspective you've got a real recipe for disaster. If however a romantic movie is exactly what you're looking for then this does deliver what it says on the tin. The storyline is very slushy with a rather stark and at times interesting insight into male and female relations. The direction seems to work to suit the style of the movie and while at 2 hours and 10 minutes long there was perhaps only 10 minutes where you felt it was dragging a little bit.
While this is as far from the type of film I'd personally want to watch it is a reasonable film. There are the slushy lovey moments you would expect and a few little twists and turns that keep the film moving forward. There are some rather pointless segways in the movie where they interview "regular" members of the public about certain dating meanings and I felt that was a complete waste of time and disrupted the flow of the film. While I can honestly say this is my idea of movie hell the script was reasonable and the direction did exactly what you would want in this type of movie.
The cast is packed full of stars including Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson all making appearances. The real star of the film is Ginnefer Goodwin an actress who looks very familiar but whose face you just can't place. In the role as the obsessive Gigi you really buy her performance as she goes from being compulsive about one relationship to another. The other star for me has to be Justin Long playing Alex as he gives out his advice to Gigi he portrays the role of Alex very well and you can tell beneath his icy exterior that he's not perhaps the person he's pretending to be.
I felt that the film really lent itself to having the two stars, however with a list of famous faces providing the roles of Gigi's friends and family there are some good human nature performances from the likes of Johansson. The supporting roles take on the family and friends well and display the characters in the way you can imagine they were written in the first place. There is only one performance and character that seemed out of place and that was Jennifer Connelly as Gigi's sister, her character was far too over the top and really has to be the weakest character in the film.
Whilst this really isn't a film for me it was reasonably enjoyable and if you're looking for a romantic feel good type of film then chances are you will enjoy this. Of course it has its moments where you expect something a bit more but from my point of view while it was enjoyable enough there really wasn't anything special about the film that would make me consider watching it again. It does do what it says on the tin though and will leave you with a slightly warmer outlook on relationships but to say anymore would probably ruin the film. Not one for me but fans of romantic movies will love it.

- 21/10/09 Sounds absolutely dire! I hate these types of movies that assume people and their motivations are all the same. |
