This is another of my film only reviews as I watched this film on the plane coming back from Honeymoon so I have not got the DVD or have watched any extras. I watched this film as I love a good easy going film to watch every now and again. This was not one of those films as nothing much happened and I cannot say I enjoyed it all that much. I was tempted to give up half way through but I didn't and here is what I thought of the film.
The story of the film is quite disjointed but you expect that from reading any synopsis. It tells the stories of quite a few people who are looking for love or fed up of love or just generally loving love. Gigi is a lady who really wants to find love, Janine and Ben are a happy couple or are they as Ben meets the very alluring Anna. Then you have Mary who works in advertising but is on the look out for love at all times and has the whole office helping her out and also waiting for the gossip at all times.
Ok so I like films where they have lots of stories which at some point do seem to interlock and this film had just that which I thought would be great. Each story was interesting in its own right and should of worked but my issue is that the script seems to be very weak indeed and this had an impact on the story.
The issue with the story is that it doesn't keep your attention because it seems to be so wishy washy. The characters are weak and the script is nothing to write home about and this means that you get a little bit fed up of everything that is going on. The stories are interesting if they are in one film but they flick between so often that when you are getting into one it goes and you don't see it again from a while. Then you have the fact that the actors don't seem to get into their roles at all and this is what I will discuss next.
So lets go through the characters in turn. Gigi was one I liked but found immensely annoying. I understand having a needy character but you go into the realm of too needy and if you don't make it humorous you just get fed up of watching it. I do however like the actress Ginnifer Goodwin as she at least seemed to get into her role but its a shame that her story was interesting but the script was just all wrong in my opinion.
Then you have Janine and Ben who are played by Jennifer Aniston and Bradley Cooper. Jennifer is playing her title role again which I like sometimes but she really needs to branch out a bit more. I think she did a lot for this role but again the story let her down. Ben I liked as his story was the most intriguing one but I did find myself going this is so predictable and Bradley just did not seem to get into the role. I have recently watched the Hangover and it was like watching a completely different actor as he really got into his role so I wished he had done it in this film.
Justin Long plays Alex who is a match maker for Gigi as he tries to give her some advice on men. I actually liked his character and his acting so I couldn't wait for his scenes to come on the screen. Unfortunately though a lot of them are with Gigi who is annoying so you just cant win with this film. Justin is always fab though!
Then the 2 people who I have missed out might as well have not been in the film as the characters were uninteresting and very flat and didn't light up the screen at all. Anna played by Scarlet Johansson is a good character and is in the most interesting storyline of the film but Scarlet seems uninterested by the role. Then Drew Barrymore plays Mary who I love usually but again she doesn't get into the role which does not make for good viewing.
The film lasts for about 2 hours which is way too long for a film of this kind. Maybe if it was 90 minutes it would have been a lot better but the film has you waiting for the end and then when it comes you think thank you.
In conclusion I do not think this film is very good. I think the story is great and the idea is fantastic but a poor execution on the screen is to blame. None of the characters are memorable and they do not light up the screen at all. The problem is none of the characters you can identify with so I lose interest in them. I did not enjoy this film but I did keep watching until the end and I can see that the ideas they had was ok.
This film gets 2 stars form me and that is purely because of the Ben storyline which was interesting. Its a shame as this film could have been great and it just fails to impress.
Thanks for reading.
