Disadvantages: Gives a bad impression to girls
Heartbreakers is a romantic comedy film released in 2001. The film is rated 15 due to a sex related plot and some minor violence and bad language and is 123 minutes long.
Plot
Max and Page are mother and daughter who make a living by conning rich men. Max is normally the one who 'meets' the rich man first and ends up marrying them only for them to nearly (but intentionally) sleep with Page. The marriages always end in divorce and Max walks away with half of everything. It is the perfect scam and so far has never failed Max and Page.
After Max's most recent divorce, the girls move to Florida and when Page decides she wants to go solo, Max pretends that the tax office has taken all of their money and they must do one last, huge job. What the girls don't bargain for though is one of Max's ex's turning up and being adamant that he still loves her.
Cast
Sigourney Weaver - Max Conners
Jennifer Love Hewitt - Page Conners
Ray Liotta - Dean Cumanno
Jason Lee - Jack Withrowe
Anne Bancroft - Gloria Vogal / Barbara
My Opinion
I remember watching this film on TV a few years ago and thinking I would hate it but I ended up thoroughly enjoying it.
There aren't many films that I like Jennifer Love Hewitt in but I have to admit, she wasn't bad in this one although I think she was mainly cast because of her looks and was sure to draw in the male audience. Most of the way through this film, Page comes across as sweet and quite naive at times but likeable too. JLH has great on screen connection with Sigourney Weaver was fantastic and you could really believe that they were mother and daughter because of all the bickering.
Sigourney Weaver was utterly amazing as Max and was a very different role for her to play, compared to Ripley in Alien. I don't think she was necessarily the right choice for the role because I don't think she looks stunning enough to get so many rich men but her costumes helped in that department. Max has some really funny lines and parts in the film, especially when she pretends to be Russian.
The one thing that does bug me a little about the plot is the fact that it isn't exactly believable. What kind of amazingly rich man would marry someone without a pre nuptial agreement? Not many I don't think.
The story moves along and quite a nice pace, mixing the love stories with some action at the right times and I didn't find any major parts of the film boring at any time. The story isn't particularly original but it entertains which is why it was made.
While I really liked the film, I don't think it gives a good impression towards girls. The whole film is about wearing skimpy outfits and marrying rich men for their money but at least it is rated 15 and most people above this age know that this isn't how life really is.
Overall, Heartbreakers isn't amazing but it is funny and entertaining throughout.
Summary: Not as bad as I thought it would be
