... and Doug Jones, returns for the visually stunning sequel, The Golden Army. Much like the first film, this is a loveably goofy film that very much revels in its own sense of carelessness - but it has warm, well developed characters who are a joy to watch on screen, notably Perlman's Hellboy, a strong and brutish, but somewhat bashful man that's something of an antidote to the very serious Bruce Waynes and Peter Parkers of the world. Del Toro also lights the screen up with some of the very best direction in a superher...more

*film only review* Fanboy! Fanboy they shout! This is the cry I hear in my dreams - my name is Sam and I am a Fanboy! I love 'Hellboy', it was my favourite film of 2004 and I have the film on DVD twice and BluRay once. If that's not excessive, I don't know what is. Fanboyism is a double edged sword; people will assume that because I loved 'Hellboy' so much that I will automatically love the second film. Wrong. The fact that I do love the first film so much means that I could hate the second film for ruining the characters (see the Star Wars films). Whatever happens the chances are I was either going to love or hate, 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army' - ...  Read the complete review

International director Guillermo del Toro has often gone on record saying that he likes to make one film for studios ('Blade II') and one for himself ('Pan's Labyrinth'). With this school of thought it makes Del Toro's 'Hellboy' movies difficult to classify. It kind of straddles the two camps with the first movie containing the big spectacle of a studio release with elements of the director's personality seeping in. The second in the saga; 'Hellboy 2: The Golden Army' continues with this mindset but makes everything a little bigger. The story focuses on an outcast elfish prince who wishes revenge on mankind for the way it treated his species in the past. In ...  Read the complete review

Spawned from Hell, our red-skinned hero now works for the US government, secretly dealing with paranormal threats to national security. Assisted by the fishman, Abe Sapien and his girlfriend Liz Sherman, Hellboy (Red to his friends) pays little regard to the authorities, much to the dismay of his superior Tom Manning. Eventually, too much unwanted attention leads to the arrival of a new leader, the ethereally challenged spectre Johann Krauss. An ancient legend is about to unfold. Buried deep within the bowels of the Earth lies an enormous army of mythical warriors, controlled only by a magical elfin crown. When the elfin Prince Nuada decides to break an ...  Read the complete review

"I'm not a baby I'm a tumour!" After a run of flops from the expensive rack at Blockbusters I finally rented something I enjoyed this week. When I heard Guillermo Del Torro was to direct the Hell Boy sequel I was quite surprised and quietly excited, his magical and visually stunning style of direction an interesting choice for comic book territory. But he did and thank heavens for that, this a real belter, only Iron Man coming near the quality of this since the Spiderman trilogy. Yep, Del Torro does borrow heavily here from other movies, recent and not so recent, everything from The Mummy to Star Wars dabbled in here, the green monster knocking the ...  Read the complete review

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army: The Golden Army: *** Introduction *** Hellboy 2: The Golden Army was a film that I actually got excited about when it was released at the cinema. I wanted to go see it then but I don't leave the house often to be honest and so I never got round to seeing it. I must have forgotten about it but I recently saw it for less than £2.99 and as I had vouchers I bought it. The version I have is the two disc special edition which looks lovely in its glossy slip case. *** About Hellboy *** Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is the sequel to, (you guessed it), Hellboy. Hellboy is a big red demon from Hell but he is ...  Read the complete review
