Advantages: fantastic storyline, variety of characters, brilliantly shot
Disadvantages: None.
Heroes is one of the most popular science fiction series to date, first aired in 2006, the first series featured 23 episodes, and at its high point was seen by over 16million people in the U.S alone.
Created by Tim Kring, it follows the story of ordinary people, with extraordinary powers.
The beginning of the series, see's these ordinary every day people, starting to realise they have abilities/powers.
There are several main characters in the first series, I'll list them without too much detail as I don't wan't to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it ;
Mohinder Saresh ; A genetesist from India who has no abilities himself, but who's father was murdered for the research he was doing on the people with abilities. Mohinder moves from India to New York to follow in his fathers footsteps by tracking down the people with abilities and finishing his fathers work.
Nathan Petrelli ; A New York counceller running for office, who has the ability to fly, but doesn't want anybody to know.
Peter Petrelli ; Brother of Nathan. He's a nurse working in New York who thinks he too has the ability to fly.
Silar (Gabriel Grey) ; Has the ability to absorb peoples powers, but how he does so is a different story.
Isaac Mendez ; A Painter in New York who has the ability to paint the future. He believes he can only do so when he's high on drugs.
Hiro Nakamura ; Working in an office in Tokyo, Japan. Hiro has the ability to bend space and time therefore being able to travel forward or backwards through it. His adventure continues throughout the first series, with his best friend Ando, he's basically Hiro's sidekick even though he has no powers himself.
Claire Bennet ; A 16 year old cheerleader from Odessa, Texas she has the ability to heal/regenerate herself.
Noah Bennet ; Claire's father, has no powers, and works for Primatech Paper, which is a front for an underground organisation trying to track down people with abilities, also known as "The Company".
Matt Parkman ; A New York police officer, who has the ability to hear peoples thoughts.
Niki Sanders ; Is a single mother working to pay off her ever increasing debt and look after her son by any means neccesary, unfortunately in her case it involves stripping on the internet. She soon becomes paranoid as when she looks in the mirror she's not sure if its her looking back. Her son Mika has the ability to talk to computers.
Ted Sprag ; Whos ability unfortunately is Radioactivity.
The Haitian ; Works with Noah at The Company and has the ability to go inside somebodys head and remove a memory, or wipe it completely.
The first season has 23 episodes. I won't comment on every episode as it could spoil it for people who havn't seen the series, but will give a basic overview;
The start of the series see's these ordinary everyday people with normal lives and jobs come to realise that they have special abilities. Artist Isaac Mendez paints a picture of the future, that future being a nuclear bomb exploding in New York.
Hiro Nakamura travels from the future to visit Peter Petrelli on the New York subway with a message, "Save The Cheerleader, Save the World." Its one of the famous quotes from the first series. The heroes believe by saving Claire Bennet the cheerleader who can heal/regenerate herself that they can change the future and some how to stop the explosion.
Not everyone wants to stop the bomb from exploding, there are people standing in the way, Silar being one of them. His hunger and greed for more power turns him into a killer and he's not going to let anyone stand in his way.
The series progresses slowly throughout episodes with each of the characters playing vital roles in the plight to stop the bomb exploding in New York. Each episode ending in a cliff hanger which makes it so addicting to watch.
Each episode is around 45minutes long. There are several other smaller characters with sub plots and other stories, but everything ties in so perfectly into the main story so you never get confused.
I'd recommend Heroes to pretty much anybody, it may take a couple of episodes to get into, but once you get the gist of whats going on, you're hooked.
Available to buy from most retailers I found season 1 & 2 on ebay for £15 each.
Thanks for reading.
Summary: So addictive!

- 28/03/09 There's a lot of good description of plots and characters etc, but I'd far rather read about why you like the series, what you think is good about it etc... |
