... pilot episode (included in this box set) maps his move from Cambridge to the camp and his introduction into camp life. Certainly, as a viewer, he was the character that I most enjoyed and most wanted to see do well. Gladys Pugh, played by Ruth Madoc, is another favourite, most famous for her Welsh accent and morning greeting to the campers over the intercom: 'Hello, campers!'. Professor Jeffrey Fairbrother seems to be a strange choice for an Entertainments Manager at Maplins, the famous holiday camp; nevertheless, he is keen to take on the job and get away from the dry, academic world that he has hitherto experienced at Cambridge University. He finds himself like a fish out of water, but slowly begins to settle in, thanks to Gladys Pugh, one of the Yellowcoats and Ted Bovis, the camp host.
