High Heels And Low Lifes (DVD) ... released 15 June, 2006 at Touchstone Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / With its limp efforts to mix comedy and drama, High Heels and Low Lifes is in many ways a faltering attempt to combine the most successful aspects of recent British cinema. Directed by Mel Smith (whose The Tall Guy was unarguably a fine film), the movie tries to work the modern gangster genre into a more farcical setting. By basing his film on the story of two friends Frances (Mary McCormack) and Shannon (Minnie Driver), Smith is aiming for a Thelma & Louise feel, but falls some way short of the mark. Having literally stumbled into a local bank robbery, the pair devise a plan to blackmail the gang behind the heist--a plan that descends into a rather predictable farce. McCormack certainly makes energetic use of the limited material she has to work with, and while kudos must go to Driver for picking a low-budget British film, she simply has been much better in her Hollywood work (notably the more understated humour of Grosse Pointe Blank). Indeed, its female leads aside, the cast is almost predominantly assembled from British television comedy shows, with Mark Williams from The Fast Show and Big Train's Danny Dyer acquitting themselves particularly well. Overall, though, it's not an awful lot to write home about. On the DVD: High Heels and Low Lifes the DVD, like the film itself, is fairly average. The soundtrack (a vibrant mix of old and new) certainly sounds good and Smith's snappy visual style is well represented. The special features, however, fail to offer us anything particularly new or exciting, featuring the now standard featurette, audio commentary from Smith and writer Kim Fuller, and a peculiar thing called an "action overload"--essentially the trailer without the voiceover. --Phil Udell

... and affable. However their is very little new material here and although humourous in places is never laugh out loud funny. The supporting cast is somewhat dissapointing (Mark Williams of The Fast Show is underused as a detective and given some of the worst lines). The 'mockney' gangster behind the robbery, who threatens the women, is very unconvincing as a nasty piece of work (I'm sure I've seen him in a sit-com as a cuddly, dim, middle-aged parent), and much of the rest of the cast is non-exsisten...more

Premium Review High Heels And Low Lifes (DVD): Lock stock and two smoking babes! (730 words)

High heels and low lifes. Thanks to Stella Screen Premiere Club, I was privileged enough to receive two tickets to the premiere of this movie. I struggled to find enthusiasm, as I am not a huge fan of British movies. It is not often I am forced to exuberate laughter at a volume that may be heard by others in the next screen room, but this movie had you rolling in the aisles. Directed by Mel Smith, of not The Nine `O’ Clock News fame, who had already achieved success with Bean and The Tall Man, High heels and Low Lifes had me transfixed to the screen within minutes. Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting, Grosse Point Blank) has ...  Read the complete review

Surely not another Brit crime caper?  (155 words)

A nurse ( Minnie Driver) and a struggling American actress (Mary McCormack) are cash-strapped London-dwelling friends who see their chance to make money when they intercept a phone call made from a robbery. With the proof on tape they attempt to blackmail the robbers, coming up against a ruthless gangster played by Michael Gambon. The film serves up the odd funny moment but no real belly laughs. The feisty femmes' hapless antics are endearingly amusing and roles for Mark Williams from The Fast Show and Big Train's Kevin Eldon up the comic ante. The plot is completely unbelievable and the girls wouldn't last five minutes in the real world messing with real ...  Read the complete review

Minnie Driver is the star of this Thelma&Louise-esque comic tale of big-money bank jobs and blackmail. Minnie plays Shannon, a honest and hard-working NHS nurse who, along with her best American friend, Frances (Mary McCormack), intercepts a phone call being made by a geezer who is in the process of assisting in a safety-deposit-box robbery. Having already attempted to report the incident to the police and not being believed on account of the fact that they are two drunk girlies, when they learn that the robbers netted £10m they decide to blackmail them for £300K. However things don't go quite as smoothly as the girls had hoped and soon ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review High Heels And Low Lifes (DVD): High jinks and low expectations (409 words)

High Heels and Lowlifes is set in London so obviously it has criminals and crime as it's main plot. However unlike the wave of bad british crime films we've had to endure in the last year this film actually has a good cast and decent laughs. Minnie Driver plays Shannon, a hospital nurse who's burned out in her job. Her american friend is a struggling actress Frances (Mary McCormack). One night they overhear a gang robbing a bank thanks to a modern artist boyfriend and one totally inept young criminal. Instead of turning a blind eye they try to blackmail the robbers into getting some of the big loot that has been stolen. Naturally things don't go ...  Read the complete review
