Advantages: You wont walk out without a smile on your face, Funny, filled with loads of famous faces, Colin Firth's in a bit of it!
Disadvantages: some might class it as a "Chick Flick" cus the main characters are female(!)
Last night was the first time in ages that I heard so many people laughing in a cinema at the same time! My friend and I were in hysterics when we saw this film and yes… most of you will probably class this as a “chick flick” but I would agree in some cases cus we related to the main characters in so many ways! But don’t let that stop you lads watching this film – you’ll be laughing your head off at how stupid women can be at trying to outdo a load of male crooks – gangster stylee! The two main (and female) characters are Shannon (Minnie Driver) a nurse in a London hospital, and Frances (Mary McCormick) a failing actress getting the most awful plays and voice-overs that you’d never wish upon anyone! It all starts with Shannon’s boyfriend being so absorbed into recording local phone conversations to make “Art” with, he forgets her birthday (typical) and so Frances decides to take her fuming best friend out for a night out on the tiles! So the pair get back - extremely drunk and listen in on a phone conversation between “Danny” (Danny Dyer – Human Traffic) and his girlfriend. What seems to be a lovers tiff turns out to be an inexperienced crook saying that he’s on a bank job with Mason (Kevin McNally) that very night in London. The girls go straight to the police but they take no notice – Frances wakes up the next morning with a stonking hangover and Danny’s mobile number written on her hand. The girls decide to take matters into their own hands (i.e blackmail the crooks and demand 2 million pounds), which leads to hilarious results! Although the girls have the main roles the men who act around them make the film even more enjoyable. Firstly there are the clueless detectives Mark Williams (Fast Show etc) and Kevin Eldon who is more interested in property value and how attractive the two women involved are than the case that they're looking into.
And the crooks have the most funniest parts in the film. Mason - nasty criminal ringleader (Kevin McNally) has a really hard time throughout the blackmail plot what with his gay boss Carrigon (Michael Gambon - Sleepy Hollow) "on his back" all the time and his inexperienced follower Danny (Danny Dyer) causing even more problems for him. Mason has no desire to be foiled by a pair of women and will do anything no matter the consequences. Minnie Driver and Mary McCormick are a fantastic duo and although McCormick's American ways could have isolated her from the more dominant English actors/actresses they instead create hilarious effects. For instance when she tries to put on an English accent and has trouble with English terms and phrases (You'll see what I'll mean!) Oh and Colin Firth makes a short appearance as a farmer who chases McCormick around a field (I shant tell you the reason why!) Overall I loved this film, my friend and I were laughing all the way through it and not once were we bored or unentertained. I just hope I havent given it all away! xxx

- 05/09/01 Although this may not be the best film ever made, I really rather enjoyed it and found it pretty funny, too. I thought the critics were a wee bit harsh and tended to underrate it. |

- 19/07/01 I've seen the film. You're right is great but why four and not five stars! I think it was brilliant! |
