Surely not another Brit crime caper? (High Heels And Low Lifes (DVD))

Advantages: the odd funny moment Disadvantages: lame plot, unoriginal
A nurse ( Minnie Driver) and a struggling American actress (Mary McCormack) are cash-strapped London-dwelling friends who see their chance to make money when they intercept a phone call made from a robbery. With the proof on tape they attempt to blackmail the robbers, coming up against a ruthless gangster played by Michael Gambon. The film serves up the odd funny moment but no real belly laughs. The feisty femmes' hapless antics are endearingly amusing and roles for Mark Williams from The Fast Show and Big Train's Kevin Eldon up the comic ante. The plot is completely unbelievable and the girls wouldn't last five minutes in the real world messing with real criminals. I feel that the lame plot and the inevitable Sisters Are doing it for Themselves on the soundtrack this film lacks imagination. It is enjoyable, if silly and does provide and alternative to the blockbusting action flicks on offer this summer. Summary: |
