Hocus Pocus (DVD)

Description: Genre: Comedy / Theatrical Release: 1993 / Director: Kenny Ortega / Actors: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker ... / ... more
Hocus Pocus (DVD) ... DVD released 05 February, 2001 at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / This big, fat theatrical bomb has a lot going for it. There's the three leads, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker, playing three resurrected witches who wreak havoc on Salem, Massachusetts, 300 hundred years after they were hung. There's music, special effects, and magic. There's a surprisingly horror-filled plot. Whoops, hold up on that last one. It's probably the extremes that this film goes to (displaying a Disney label), such as the witches sucking the life out of a little girl in the first five minutes, that put the brakes on any success for Hocus Pocus. Older children, however, in the 8 and up range should get a kick out of all the weird goings-on. It's a good measure of Halloween thrills and chills. --Keith Simanton

I have to say that I am slightly biased in marking this as a great movie if you compare it to the Shawshank Redemption etc. but for many people I grew up watcing this movie nearly every year. Plot The film starts back in 1693 where an older brother, Thackery Binx, searches deperately for his sister, who as been lured to the witches cottage to have the youth and beauty sucked out of her. Unfortunately Binx' attempts to save her fails and his sister dies while he is cursed to remain a cat forever for his troubles. Thankfully the witches dont get away with it and are hanged (but they claim that they will be back if a virgin lights their black flamed candle) ...  Read the complete review

This is one of my favourite films from when I was younger, I had to watch it whenever it was on TV. Then last christmas I received it on DVD as a gift mainly because I was constantly going on about it. So now I can watch it whenever I want not just at Halloween! The actors in this film work very well together, with a good comedy performance especially from Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker. The film opens in the year 1693 in Salem with three sisters who are witches their names are Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson. They are pure evil and are executed for their use of witchcraft and for sucking the life force out of young children. Emily is ...  Read the complete review
