Hook (DVD) ... Hoffman, Robin Williams ... / DVD released 21 March, 2000 at Sony Pictures Home Ent / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Closed-captioned, Colour, Dolby, DVD-Video, Widescreen, NTSC / Hook is Steven Spielberg's most spectacular film of the 90s. It is also seriously underrated, arguably the equal of ET, (1982) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, (1977). An unofficial sequel to J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, Hook adopts the startling premise of what happened after "the boy who never grew up", grew up. Robin Williams, in his career best performance, is the corporate suit forced to remember he once was "The Pan", returning to Neverland to battle nefarious Captain Hook (a splendid Dustin Hoffman), for his children's love. This is a ravishingly beautiful, stunningly designed film, at once highly imaginative and with a genuinely magical atmosphere which ranges from exquisite, delicate fantasy to slapstick tomfoolery. There is fine support from Maggie Smith, Julia Roberts and Bob Hoskins, and John Williams' rapturously romantic score is yet another career high. Slated upon release, and dubbed a flop though it grossed $200 million, Hook reacted against the "greed is good" 80s by upholding family values and responsibility while evoking a genuine sense of wonder. Only the somewhat pantomime final showdown disappoints, but alongside Legend, (1985)and Labyrinth, (1986), Hook is ripe for reassessment as a fantasy classic. The DVD transfer is superb and the disc, though not packed with additional features, has some interesting extras. --Gary S. Dalkin

... well in relation to modern cinema but this only adds to the childlike, cartoonish charm of what is essentially a children's story. Along with some drawn out less necessary scenes the scripting, although poetic at times, was often found to be laborious and droning. The film as a whole though is an entertaining, emotive roller coaster with a brilliant cast, multiple target audiences and a compelling and original storyline. I am not really a Robin Williams number 1 fan but he did a pretty entertaining job. I have seen ...more

Premium Review Hook (DVD): The real return to Neverland (510 words)

Rating:

The advent of the recent Disney film has, to my mind at least, drawn comparissons with an older Spielberg piece: "Hook". I haven't seen the Disney, but from what I've heard, the plots are quite similar in some ways. The plot: Peter Pan left Neverland when he saw Moira, grandaughter of Wendy. Wendy was running a home for lost boys in London, Peter stayed, forgetting his magical past. We meet him grown up, living in America and busy with business. He has two children - Jack and Maggie, but he doesn't have much time for either. A Christmas invitation back to London takes his fmaily across the pond. The children are delighted - they know that ...  Read the complete review

I bought the Spielberg edition of Empire magazine on Saturday. I'd never read a film magazine before, but I was going to be stuck at Crewe station for some time, and I do like John William's soundtracks, so I thought I'd see what it was like. I was thouroughly engrossed, but then I suddenly realised something. The format of the magazine was that there were a number of articles on Spielberg interspersed with interviews and reviews of each film. I dived straight for the review of Hook, which is almost my favourite film of all time - after the Star Wars Saga of course - and discovered that it got an awful review; two stars out of a possible five. I ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Hook (DVD): By hookey, he's a nasty piece of work (701 words)

Spielberg! The magic touch, the weaver of dreams, one of the ugliest and dullest men in movies... Williams! The manic, permanently bewildered little boy in a man's body, patently larger than life and constantly weaving a tale around that breakthrough role of his as Mork from Ork... It's a marriage made in heaven as the two biggest kids in cinema wind their talent and calculating minds around the old J M Barrie children's tale, relocating it a million miles away from the undoubtedly vivid and attractive cartoon masterpiece of Disney's take on the theme. The updated and nastier version of the Peter Pan legend, Hook, is a sumptuous ...  Read the complete review

Hook is a variation on the Peter Pan story, but rather than Peter being the 12 or 13 year old boy he always was, we find that Peter is a middle aged man, and a miserable one at that. Peter is now an a lawyer (no wonder he's miserable!!), spends more time concentrating on his clients than his family. He has been invited to be the key speaker at a function to honour Wendy, who's now an elderly lady who's devoted her life to helping orphans and Great Ormand Street Hospital. So much so they are dedicating a new wing to her. Peter has two children, a boy named Jack and a younger girl called Maggie. Maggie strangely enough has the lead role in a play ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Hook (DVD): You'll be HOOKed! (447 words)

Hook was one of my favourite films growing up and it was on Channel Five the other day, much to the disappointment of my boyfriend who wanted to watch the FA Cup final! The film was made in 1991 (I can't believe it's that old!) and was directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Robin Williams as Peter Pan, Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook and Julia Roberts as Tinker bell. Hook is based on the classic Peter Pan story except Peter Pan left NeverLand, got married, became a grumpy lawyer and had two children of his own. Peter Banning married Wendy's granddaughter Moira and their children are Jack and Maggie. Peter isn't a great Dad and lets the children down ...  Read the complete review
