... movies that exists solely for its final sequence, completely disregarding the fact that whilst the climax to Se7en was groundbreaking, the preceding narrative was pretty good too. Instead, 'Horsemen' rolls around the screen, scooping up bits of Saw and Se7en wherever it goes. Bizarrely, other critics have apparently awarded it inspirational influences from other genre classics, nobly Clive Barker's Hellraiser, but such links are so utterly superficial that such a comparison insults both parties. Put quite simply, Horsem...more

Premium Review Horsemen Of The Apocalypse (DVD): A Norseman directed Horsemen. (1059 words)

Horsemen (2009) Cert. 18. Dennis Quaid stars in this thriller and for me that was enough reason to watch it. An underrated actor who has been incredibly prolific in his career yet has never really been 'up there' with the big stars. He acts in a similar way, in my opinion to Harrison Ford, and looks a bit like him too. The director of the film is one Jonas Akerlund, never heard of him? Me neither, he has a long list of credits for directing rock/indie/ metal videos; Mettalica, Prodigy, Blink 182, but this seems to be his first foray into 'films'. ****Okay, the plot**** I always wonder in this part of reviews how much ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review What a load of horse-crap! (418 words)

Rating:

Now I like Dennis Quaid: he's a good actor. However, just from reading the synopsis of this one I wasn't so sure I would like it, and sadly the film confirmed that my initial instincts were spot on! Aidan Breslin (Quaid) is an experienced homicide detective still grieving over the loss of his wife. He's investigating a series of quasi mystical murders and finds shocking links back to himself. OK, first off, this comes across as a 'made for TV' kind of film. Apart from Quaid there's no-one of interest in it, and the weight is all on the star to make it happen. The camera work and editing is all very TV focused, and you know within five minutes it's ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Horsemen Of The Apocalypse (DVD): Come and See (If You're Really Bored) (1159 words)
by - written on 07/11/09 (Very useful, 167 readings)
Rating:

This is a review of just the film rather than the DVD presentation, which, for region 2, is available for around £8 online. Detective Aidan Breslin struggles to balance the needs of his family and his police work, even more so since the death of his wife. Desperately attempting to spend some quality time with his two sons, Breslin is largely thwarted at every turn. Called to the scene of a very bizarre crime scene one cold, wintry afternoon, Breslin's experience with forensic dentistry quickly enables him to deduce that a man in his thirties has been abducted, but is probably still alive, even if he doesn't have any teeth any more. This quickly catalyses an ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review War, famine, pestilence and death - come on then, Quaid, wha ... (602 words)

Rating:

Horsemen is a film that seems to have almost slipped in under the radar amidst the latest batch of hot releases. A 2009 film that I might have missed, it is a dark police thriller with the ever-anxious Dennis Quaid playing a detective frantically trying to solve and stop a killing spree that has links to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Quaid has long been an actor I have admired, but he has a tendency to just look on edge all the time, no matter what is going on. This had led to him having memorable roles in tense films, and this is no exception. At times, the film could have done with him letting loose a little and relaxing, as it is very dark and very ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Horsemen Of The Apocalypse (DVD): Dull and inoffensive until its third act (252 words)
by - written on 29/08/09 (Useful, 17 readings)
Rating:

note: appears in part on Flixster Horsemen is a film that for 90% of its runtime is a routine but inoffensive thriller that's just not loaded with enough heart to really resonate. However, it is mired by the current need for modern thrillers, since the release of Saw, to be loaded with game changing twists that, most of the time, don't even make sense! Horsemen falls into this category, well and truly derailing itself from dull thriller fare into insulting thriller fare. It's a shame, because there are actually some solid cast and crew out to play - the cinematography is appropriately murky (even if it has become somewhat boring after five Saw ...  Read the complete review
