Advantages: Well shot, so-so good acting

Disadvantages: TERRIBLE twist

note: appears in part on Flixster

Horsemen is a film that for 90% of its runtime is a routine but inoffensive thriller that's just not loaded with enough heart to really resonate. However, it is mired by the current need for modern thrillers, since the release of Saw, to be loaded with game changing twists that, most of the time, don't even make sense! Horsemen falls into this category, well and truly derailing itself from dull thriller fare into insulting thriller fare.

It's a shame, because there are actually some solid cast and crew out to play - the cinematography is appropriately murky (even if it has become somewhat boring after five Saw films), and Dennis Quaid gives it all, but the film ultimately surrenders its positives due to the huge negative that is the film's pretensions to a sort of intelligent morality, in much the same way as the more recent Saw sequels tried to. Not to mention, some of the supporting work, chiefly from Zhang Ziyi, is utterly terrible - she should not be allowed to act outside of her native tongue if this film is any indication.

One can't help but feel sorry for Dennis Quaid, who lands smack in the middle of this Saw knock-off that isn't grisly enough to satisfy gorehounds nor intelligent enough to please anyone else. Zhang Ziyi's acting is pretty atrocious, and an utterly ridiculous plot twist turns this from an unambitious, mildly intriguing thriller into one that insults your intelligence.

Summary: A rubbish twist derails an inoffensive thriller

Will stay away from this, I'm always looking for films with good twists, really smart twists as I seem to work out all of the ones I've recently watched recently. Brill review. Kirsty x
