Review of the DVD "Hot Fuzz"
The DVD

This DVD was released by Universal Pictures in 2007. It has a run time of 1 hour 56 minutes and has been designated as suitable for age 15 or more. The genre is Action/Adventure/Comedy.

The DVD carries a warning that the film contains strong very language, strong bloody comic violence (?).
This is a two disc DVD and there are so many extras included that I could spend an hour listing them! I won't of course as, A) I doubt anyone really wants to read them and B) the review would go on too long! Suffice to say that the out takes, commentaries and features are well worth watching, something I never thought I'd say in a DVD review, as normally I don't bother with them!


The soundtrack is brilliant with an eclectic mix of modern and almost spaghetti western type tracks which add a touch of atmosphere to the storyline.
The Plot


London policeman PC Nicholas Angel is a one man crime stopper. Whatever he turns his hand to in his career he succeeds in, he is a remarkable policeman, married to his job and a dedicated officer. His station has wonderful crime clear up reports, thanks to PC Angel's efforts.

None of this makes him very popular, he has been dating a WPC who becomes tired of always taking second place to the 'Force' or the 'Service' as the pedantic, politically correct PC Angel prefers to call the Police Force. His girlfriend subsequently finds a new boyfriend and dumps PC Angel. Following an injury that he sustained in the call of duty, Nicholas Angel is transferred to a small town Police Station, Sandford.


He does not welcome his new post and Nicholas tries everything he can think of to avoid the move to no avail.

In Sandford, PC Angel is teamed up with a partner, Danny, who is also the son of the Station Sergeant. Danny is a large, bumbling character, none too bright and is fixated by TV cop shows.

Nicholas struggles to fit into small town life and when a series of grisly events rock the residents of Sandford, Nicholas and Danny find that Danny's fantasies of gun fights, car chases and action become a reality, with hilarious and bizarre results.

If you want to know more, I'm afraid you'll have to watch the DVD, I've no wish to be spoiling the storyline for others!

The Cast

The main character, PC Nicholas Angel is played by Simon Pegg and the role of his side kick Danny, is taken by Nick Frost. The pair acted successfully together in "Sean of The Dead" and the comedy partnership works well in this movie too.


Other cast includes Olivia Coleman, Timothy Dalton, David Bradley, Edward Woodward, Kevin Eldon, Stuart Wilson, Jim Broadbent, Billie Whitelaw, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Bill Bailey, Anne Reid, Paul Freeman, Bill Nighy and Steve Coogan.

The RRP of this 2 disc DVD is £24.99.

My copy came from Tesco and cost £2.99, a veritable bargain in my opinion. It is also available on www.play.com at £6.99 or www.amazon.co.uk from £1.41 new or 0.60p used.
My Thoughts and Conclusion


Hot Fuzz is one of those quirky films that sort of stay with you. I last watched the DVD a couple of weeks ago and am still sniggering about the shoot out in a supermarket! I have to say that I found the film hilarious in parts, sad in others and rather gruesome in some scenes.
The plot is irreverent towards the Police Service and pokes fun at British society in a gentle, yet all too true fashion.

All in all, a great British comedy classic in the making. If you enjoyed "Sean of The Dead", try Hot Fuzz for more adventures with the Pegg/Frost duo. If you haven't seen either film, I would recommend them both.
Hot Fuzz is a good movie, but not for those easily offended by bad language and bloody violence, even though it is portrayed in a humorous format.
