Advantages: Funny at times, good characters, good story

Disadvantages: Might not be to everyones taste

The most recent film to make it the top of my rental list on Lovefilm was Hot Fuzz. This was one of my husband's choices so I sat down not knowing what to expect at all. I thought by the name it was some American action film however I was surprised to find that it was in fact a British comedy.

It is made by the same people who made "Shaun of the Dead" although I can't really compare the two as I haven't seen that film.

The main character in the film is Simon Pegg who plays Nicholas Angel a successful police officer working in London. However his successes in his work start to make the rest of the police force look bad so they transfer him up to the sleepy village of Sandford. Angel immediately gets the villagers backs up by emptying the pub of all the underage drinkers (and so losing the pub owner a lot of custom) and then ends up arresting a fellow police officer for drunk driving!

As Angel begins work in the village he discovers that there are quite a lot of mysterious goings on and a bit too many so called "accidents" which seem to result in a high death rate. Angel decides to investigate further along with his work partner Danny Butterman played by Nick Frost.

This film is really not what I was expecting. It has a good although completely unbelievable plot line which just adds to the humour of the film. It really is a film that doesn't take itself too seriously. There is a good cast including Jim Broadbent and Timothy Dalton. The casting of Pegg and Frost as partners works really well with Danny being a rather naïve and clueless policeman really looking up to Angel as a police officer who has fired a gun and worked in London. Their relationship in the film is really quite funny and really makes the film.

For those of you who like some blood and gore there is plenty of that too but in a comic rather than a scary way. There are lots of special effects and some gunfights including scenes taken from films like Bad Boys which is what the character Danny keeps watching to learn how to be a police officer!

I enjoyed the film, it's not the best film I have ever seen and I wouldn't necessarily rush to buy it but it was an enjoyable film to watch and made me laugh.

The film also has lots of extras including many deleted scenes, commentary, out-takes and documentaries showing the making of the film which you might enjoy watching if you enjoyed the film.

The single disc version is for sale for £3.78 in Amazon at the time of writing and the 2 disc version is £6.98. It is rated 15 and the running time is 116 minutes.

Summary: A policeman moves from London to an apparently sleepy village but finds that all is not as it seems!

I was dating a policeman so it was doubly comic irony! :-D
