FILM ONLY
For the most part of this film I sympathised with Robert Neville in his quest to find a cure for the magic vaccine that went horribly wrong, not because I empathised with him but I knew how he felt, because I kept waiting for the rush of excitement, the thrill, both of which I still patiently await.
A miracle cure had been found that rid this planet of cancer, it was a wonder and all hailed the discovery, that was until it all started to go wrong and the human race began to mutate. The largest percentage of people who came into contact with the virus which was a mutated version of the measles vaccine simply mutated themselves. Others died from it's effects and there was a small percentage that were immune. Robert Neville was however at first unaware of this and believed himself to be the lone survivor struggling to find the cure.
Initially the film moves along at a slow pace with a sudden influx of pace here and there where he gets close to some of the mutants of whom he needs one every so often to test his latest possible cure. There are many failures some more dramatic than others. His AM radio transmission which he plays automatically to contact any survivors, and instructs them to meet him at the pier at noon when the sun is highest. He offers them food shelter and security. Most days however there are no takers and his belief in being alone is strengthened.
He is accompanied on his solo quest by the family pet Sam who he kept after seeing his wife and child off in a helecopter when the city was first evacuated, throughout the film there are brief flashbacks to fill you in on previous events. The graphics are pretty good as are the special effects, but the music for me was pretty unmemorable. In fact there wasn't really that much about this that I can particularly praise.
The film is by no way boring, but after all the hype I really expected a lot more from it which ended up in me being quite disappointed. There were never any cliffhangers or moments where I was left wondering the outcome, in fact the whole shebang was pretty much predicable. It's not a film I will be returning to in the future should I find myself at a loose end.
Summary: A mediocre and predicable film which I shall definately not return too
