Advantages: Great movie, excellent acting from Will Smith.

Disadvantages: CGI, not the best, only minor concern.

'I am Legend' is the blockbuster movie starring Will Smith released in 2007, it is based on the novel of the same name from the 1950s written by Richard Matheson. I personally haven't read the book, but after watching the movie I certainly want to.

As a fan of apocalyptic action movies and vampire/monster ilk movies this was a movie I had to watch. This review is based on the film only and not the DVD.

Plot

When an apparent miracle cure for cancer becomes available all seems to be well until it goes wrong and causes to infect and mutate humans, Dr. Robert Neville, who is also luckily immune is in charge of creating an antidote and stays behind while New York City is evacuated. Unfortunately for Neville and mankind for that matter, he us unable create, the illusive antidote and the disease progresses and wipes out all human life.

The scene now moves into 3 years into the future and we see that believing he is the only human left Neville and his trusty German shepherd dog Sam are living a lonely existence. To keep himself sane he still carries the belief that he will find a cure, that can ultimately reverse the mutations, in his basement, come lab CSI would be proud of, he has every resource imaginable, working on different serums to find a cure, trying them out on rats captured around the city.

Neville's unwillingness to give up on the slim hope that there are other survivors out there, he is continuously looking for others, broadcasting a message on the radio stating if there is anyone out there to meet him at the pier at midday. Every single day he is there still with faint hope, but no one ever arrives.

When the sun goes down it is not a safe place to be out and about, as danger lurks around every corner and Neville has to take refuge in his house that had been modified to be as secure as possible with numerous shutters, bolts and locks to be a fortress.

After seeing some success in his experiments, Neville decides to up the stakes and test on a mutated human, after capturing one, a female, and unknown to him, the alpha male mutant wants her back and this causes a series of events which turns out to have dire consequences.


My opinions


In my opinion 'I am Legend' is an excellent movie, it provides fascinating viewing with New York in its post-apocalyptic state. Seeing the famous streets and avenues of New York which we are all accustomed to, juxtaposed as barren and empty is a sight to be hold, and is extremely well done and makes the unbelievable, believable.

Will Smith manages to hold your attention and you genuinely feel and care for his characters plight, and being the main and only character for the majority of the film he puts in a great performance as usual.

Some of the CGI of the mutants is not the best I have seen, but this is only a minor problem from an otherwise great action movie.

Summary: A great Action/Sci-Fi movie.
