I Am Legend (I Am Legend (DVD))

Advantages: Well-crafted first half, with Smith providing a steady performance Disadvantages: The less than satisfactory computer graphics and the disappointing ending An excellent character study for what loneliness does to people - the slight mental alterations, the ever-lasting fight for survival, the paranoia.... All of these factors are portrayed convincingly in "I Am Legend." Being alone in Manhattan, Will Smith is bored, engages in odd activities and hobbies but when night comes, he arms himself and has to have a stand-off with mysterious looking vampires/zombies. The zombie plot would have worked well if the computer graphics were half-decent but compared to the modern standards, they really aren't. Smith again puts on a fine dramatic performance, boosting the film's quality. The ending is a little sloppy and goes against everything the film was really building towards. The way Smith's character comes to his revelation is lame, and the second half is now way near as good as the first. But as far as future, apocalyptic films go, this deals with a smart plot, has a convincing leading man and combines action/horror/thriller elements skillfully into one place. Summary: Interesting character development combined with fine action scenes |
