Advantages: Adam Sandler at his best, good message.
Disadvantages: Not enough of the funny's.
I rented this movie today after college, and whilst I was in the shop with my nan and we were trying to choose between this and a random chick flick, I had never heard anything about the chick flick, and said you can never go wrong with an Adam Sandler film so that is how we started watching it, like you really care. Now for the decent stuff.
===PLOT===
Adam Sandler and Kevin James play two New York Fire-fighters. Larry (James) is still suffering raising his two children after his wife died three years ago and Chuck will date/sleep with anything that wears a skirt.
Larry is trying to change his beneficiary from his late wife to his children but because he didn't do it in the time said, he can't. He worries because he is a fire-fighter and could die at any time.
So he hatches a plan, to get married to his best friend Chuck in a civil partnership which will go over the system. They try and keep their relationship a secret but start to get investigated for fraud purposes and hire a lawyer called Alex (Jessica Biel)
===TYPICAL===
Imagine 50 first dates with Kevin James instead of Drew Barrymore, that's pretty much it. Adam Sandler is well known for his romantic comedies with a message in them, for example 'Love can concur all' in 50 first dates, 'kids should stay in school' in Daddy Day Care and 'golf is still boring' in the terrible Happy Gilmore.
This message is that stereotyping does hurt, and it doesn't matter what your sexual preferences you are, your still equal in the world to everyone else.
It's a nice film, but is a typical Adam Sandler. I know some people can't stand him, his jokes are not for everyone's taste but I myself love the fact that you know that his films are always gonna bring you laughs and have a good ending.
===GAY JOKES===
Even though through the film, they bring in some very stereotypical gays that could be quite offensive. I know some of the jokes made me wince every now and then, but over all I think it was done tastefully and there's not too much for the homophobes of the world to have a go at.
===SANDLER===
Adam Sandler was fantastic in this. The last film I watched him in was a re-showing of Daddy Day Care on Channel 5 and found it a bit bland. I've always been a fan of his work, and love the fact that you always know your 'safe' if you watch his movies.
===KEVIN JAMES===
Not as well known, my nan had no clue who he was. Most famous for 'King Of Queens' which I watched religiously every morning for two years when I was sick. He's a great actor, who embraces the fact that he may not be the slimmest of people, but is able to hold it well and is actually a fantastic actor. He had great chemistry along side Sandler.
===FUNNY===
Not so much as his other movies. Some of his movies you can't help but laughing your head of but I spent most of the time laughing at my Nan who didn't like the idea of two men kissing, think I said the word above.
There are jokes placed here and there, but not enough. You mainly concentrate on how the two men realise how badly gays are treated and even begin to fight for their peace.
===ACTING===
Not award winning but still believable. Adam Sandler always has people who crop up in his movies, especially the likes of Rob Schneider who has been in the following: Click, 50 First Dates, Mr Deeds and Little Nicky to name a few. However I was shocked to see that he was unaccredited, even though he had about a 10 minute part in the film whereas Dave Matthews had a 1 minute part in the film and was mentioned.
Jessica Biel didn't really do anything for this film at all, I even forgot she played the lawyer for a second. I loved her in The Illusionist and Next but this film didn't do much for her career at all.
===MUSIC===
Not really memorable for the music side of things, but "Under Pressure" by Queen was perfect when they were about to go into court... It really set the mood right. There's also some nice comments about James Blunt's- Your Beautiful.
===Quotes===
[Chuck and Larry are about to get married in a Canadian chapel]
Chuck Levine: Would you wear a yarmulke? It would make my mother proud.
Larry Valentine: I'm not wearing a yarmulke. Come on.
Chuck Levine: I'm Jewish. I don't want to piss my mother off.
Larry Valentine: Yeah? Well, I'm Catholic. I don't want to piss Mel Gibson off.
Chuck Levine: Going in alive.
Larry Valentine: Coming out the same way.
===WORTH WATCHING===
If you're an Adam Sandler film or looking for a good laugh(ish) this is the film for you. It's got a basic storyline, nothing too complicated.
===DVD ===
You can get it about 12.99 off sites like play.com or amazon.co.uk but your best bet is probably EBay or renting it out. It's not the sort of film you'll probably want to watch over and over.
Hope you enjoyed the review.
