Advantages: Looking at Carmen Electra and Michelle Ryan
Disadvantages: No other reason at all to watch it.
I Want Candy is the British American Pie, or so the ad blurb shouts out at us. Sadly though for British comedy the only connection IWC has to American Pie is that the plot revolves around sex, just like its illustrious, and funny, predecessor.
Joe & Baggy are two aspiring film makers learning their craft at Leatherhead Uni under the tutelage of a ‘right on’, avant garde, posey teacher (Mackenzie Crook).
They have their end of course film all planned out and have fantasies of ‘Love Storm’ being the first student film to win an Oscar. When their teacher announces that the end of course project is to make a short film they are outraged… ‘You’ve got some editing to do to do then’ is his reply.
Safe in their belief in their own script and their abilities as producer and director/writer they head off into London to show their script to England’s best production company… Working Title. Expecting a company to want to not only listen to your pitch (attempt to sell the film) but also give you money can be a bigger dream than that of winning an Oscar and soon they find themselves out on the street.
Soon a fortuitous discovery of Head Films gains them financing for their project, but only as long as they secure the services of Candy Fiveways, the biggest adult movie star in the world (played by Carmen Electra). ‘Love Storm’ finally has a shot at being made… albeit as a ‘Gentleman’s Special Interest’ film as opposed to their planned psychological thriller.
The biggest problem with I Want Candy is that it is so old and tired. While the situations may be slightly changed, making a porn film is an unusual subject, we have seen it all before. In fact the two boy partnership and the good looking girl friend/love interest in it reminded me a lot of ‘Shooting Fish’ in its cast dynamics. While ‘Shooting Fish’ was a fun enjoyable romp though I Want Candy is the opposite. Not only is it completely unfunny (only two scenes brought a grin to my face) but it is also a shining example of all that is wrong with British comedy films. They lack any kind of humour in the script, the writers have come up with a germ of an idea that does have a little bit of promise, but it seems as if once they came up with that idea they couldn’t think of any good jokes to go with it.
The two leads are quite affable, but that is it. They don’t really set the screen alight and it is left to Carmen Electra to hold the film together, and she just isn’t a good enough actress to manage that. Though she does come across really well as Candy Fiveways she isn’t a headline quality actress.
Jimmy Carr pops up a couple of times as a DVD store owner/worker and has the only really good lines in the whole film but his character is just ‘Jimmy Carr’ really. In a good film this could have worked but all this does is make it stand out that Carr is actually funny and that he is just really being himself.
The only other two that do come out of it quite well are Eddie Marsan as Doug, the owner of the Porn film company financing the young film makers and Michelle Ryan (ex of Eastenders) who is terrific as the boys friend.
All in all I Want Candy is a waste of time, sadly a statement that is becoming more and more true with most comedies made in the UK these days.
Summary: A British comedy that isn't funny
