Advantages: keeps the kids amused
Disadvantages: predictable
Ice Age is a 20th Century Fox film, which is aimed at the kiddies and released in time for maximum audiences over the recent school holidays. I actually ended up seeing this film with the kids because we arrived too late at the cinema and the others were full. But I digress, and the tickets were bought for Ice Age! We begin with a pack of animals heading south for the winter. Of course someone gets left behind and in this case it is a mammoth (Mammy), a very stupid sloth (Sid), a collection of sabre tooth tigers and a very funny squirrel. The main story centres on a human child who is found by this unlikely group, and their 'adventures' in trying to return the child to its father. The animation is excellent, and I was particularly impressed with the glacier scenes. In contrast to the animals the humans were very 'angular' and somewhat unreal looking. However I'm sure most kids don't notice the finer points of the animation. Overall the film was somewhat predictable, but good family entertainment. It would perhaps be better suited to the small screen. My favourite character was Scrat the crazy squirrel who tried in vain throughout the film to save one acorn from being frozen, and this provides some genuinely funny moments. The film lasts runs for 85 minutes, and apparently there is a sequel planned ( I can only hazard a guess at the title? Ice Age 2 perhaps!)
