On a dark and stormy night, a group of strangers find themselves stranded in a lonely motel. When people start dying, they ask themselves why them, and soon find out they all have the same birthday; coincidence or not?
This is an interesting and chilling thriller that really went under the radar when it came out. There are some films that don't seem like the studio really care about them, but are actually really quite good, and this is one of them.
The plot is really clever, and the ending is such a twist it's like nothing you can imagine. The stereotypical horror setting of dark night, rain etc, is the only cliché in it, and I really found it an edge of your seat film. Like the characters involved, you're trying to work out what the heck is going on as people die left right and center. There are lots of dead ends and red herrings to keep it interesting, and no-one but no-one would predict that ending!
The acting is pretty solid. John Cusack takes the main role, and holds it well. I like John as an actor. There's something about his dark looks and withdrawn manner that makes him really right for the role in this sort of film. Alongside him is Ray Liotta. To be fair, Liotta hasn't looked too good since Goodfellas, but he's OK in this.
The film has some really strong violence in it (force fed a baseball bat anyone?) which adds to the sense that there is something really bad going on.
If you liked it, try 1408 which is another dark thriller with a horror twist that also stars John Cusack.
All in all, this is a chilling thriller. The ending will annoy some because it's so out there, but I liked it. If you want something a bit different to the norm, then this is the film for you!
